1 | This is an example of a "theophany". | Josh 5:15 | believer57 | 34006
One of my most beloved passages in the Bible. Joshua, preparing for battle against Jericho, with 40,000 mighty men of war, v.13.."And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him. Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?" Joshua "lifted up his eyes" before going into a terrible battle and beheld none other than the Son of God! He had come, as the "captain of the Host" to reassure and lead Joshua into the conquest of Jericho! Ever have a tough Day? Then look up! He will come to you, too!

Greetings believer57! The word "theophany" comes from two Greek words: 'theos', meaning "God", and 'phaino', meaning "to appear." A theophany is an appearance or manifestation of God, usually in a visible form. I, like you, believe that certain occurrences of theophany in the OT (an excellent example where you have already cited in Joshua 5:13-15) were actually preincarnate appearances of Christ! The Angel of the Lord is the principal theophany in the Old Testament, and it directly correlates with what we know as the Trinity in the New Testament! Blessings to you, Makarios |

Makarios, Thank you for the follow up. The pre-existence of Christ, I believe, is the cornerstone to our faith. When the Holy Spirit revealed Him to me through the Word, the OT literally came alive to me! My son calls me "theo" because I search for Christ so much in the OT! You may, or may not, realize how many of our brothers and sisters do not know this! It is essential to our relationship with HIm and understanding Him! I don't know if you saw, but I was searching around the site, (I am new to it), and saw some notes on the Trinity. I saw one from an obvious "unitarian", and my response was a little hot! I do not understand why they are so afraid of our blessed Trinity! I have some opinions, we can discuss those some day if you like. My referenced son was briefly involved in the "way international", and this is when I went to the Lord and recommitted my life to Him. He then began to show me His Son in the OT, and the Holy Spirit as well, and it has changed my life forever! My son has come to the truth as well! I believe these so called "unitarians" are afraid of the Truth! TheY preach "a Christ which we do not preach" and are descbribed perfectly in the Word in 2 Peter, as well as other places, (false prophets). It is nothing more than a cult. They deny Christ, and we know what He said about that. They hinder, or actually blaspheme the Holy Spirit, and we know what He said about that, as well. Anyway, thanks for the reply. Holler back if I can do anything for you! God Bless You..Believer57 |

Greetings believer57! Yes, the Trinity has been much discussed on this Forum, and I am one (among the many believers here) who believes in the Tri-une Godhead, that is: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But you have brought out an excellent point: that Jesus Christ has existed with the Father before the world was ever created! (Hebrews 1:2; 13:8; Colossians 1:17; John 8:58). I agree, it is heresy to uphold that Jesus was somehow 'created' by God, since Jesus (the Son) has always been with the Father forever! I certainly will let you know if I need anything, friend! :-) Blessings to you, Makarios |

Makarios, Not to "beat it to death", but one last point for you. Especially, if you run in to one of these "unitarians". I always direct them to Romans 1:25; "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever." They believe that Jesus was created in the manger, therefore a "creature". That's one they usually just look down at the ground, and can't say anything. We are not to worship creatures, (anything that is created). I believe that they, at least some of them, are aware of this scripture, and in fact, do not worship our Lord and Saviour! They do not like to admit it though...God Bless...believer57 |
