4 | In reading Joshua 3:1-17 please explain | Josh 12:1 | Morant61 | 62460
Greetings InGodsWill! It is exciting to hear about any new student of God's Word. Keep up the good work of rightly dividing God's Word - it is the work of a lifetime. If I may, I will address your question about Joshua 3:7-17. Here is the text of the passage in question: "And the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. 8 Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: 'When you reach the edge of the Jordan's waters, go and stand in the river.'" 9 Joshua said to the Israelites, "Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God. 10 This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. 11 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. 12 Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. 13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD - the Lord of all the earth - set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap." 14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. 15 Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17 The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground." From the context of this passage, it is clear that God was with them in the working of the miracle as He parted the Jordon river. According to the passage, the miracle served two purposes. 1) It exalted Joshua in the eyes of Israel by demonstrating that God was with him as He had been with Moses - v. 7. 2) It demonstrated to Israel that God was still with them after the 40 years of wandering, just as He had been with them when He parted the Red Sea - v. 10. This was to be proof to them that God would in fact drive out the nations before them as He had promised. I hope this answers your question. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

5 | In reading Joshua 3:1-17 please explain | Josh 12:1 | Ray | 62475
Hi Tim, While you are honing your Hebrew skills will you (as an aside here) talk about how things are exalted. For instance you talk of Joshua being exalted in the eyes of Israel. The choice of "eyes" instead of "sight" leaves open a certain amount of personal decision or discernment. In that regard, or with that in mind, would you consider with me 2 Samuel 7:23 and 2 Samuel 8:13. How do you translate or interpret the idea of "making a name" or being exalted in someone's eyes in these two verses in 2 Samuel? Is God making a name for Himself or for the people? Could it read simply "to make a name" for verse 23? From the heart, Ray |

6 | In reading Joshua 3:1-17 please explain | Josh 12:1 | Morant61 | 62481
Greetings Ray! The phrase in 2 Sam. 8:13 is a little different than in 2 Sam. 7:23, but I think they both refer to 'establising a reputation' in the eyes of others based upon the things one has accomplished. So, God was making a name for Himself in 2 Sam. 7:23, while David made a name for himself in 2 Sam. 8:13. I don't think that 2 Sam. 7:23 actually includes the pronoun 'himself'. However, every translation does render the phrase, 'make a name for Himself'. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, Thanks for your work here. If 2 Samuel 7:23 does not have the pronoun 'himself' I will not put it in. I want to compare it to Exodus 33:16, "For how then can it be known that I have found favor in (Thy) sight, I and Thy people? Is it not by Thy going with us, so that we, I and **Thy people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth?" 2 Samuel 7:23b, "...and awesome things for (Thy) land, before Thy people whom Thou hast redeemed for **Thyself from Egypt, from nations and their gods?" Deuteronomy 3:24, "O Lord God, (Thou) has begun to show Thy servant Thy greatness and **Thy strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Thine?" Deuteronomy 4:7, "For whay great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on **Him?" Tim, how about 1 Chronicles 29:11? Would you go with the NKJ, "And You are exalted as head over all." In other words, is the "Thyself" in the Hebrew? And, lastly, how about 1 Chronicles 17:21? Is the word "Thee" in the Hebrew? I would want to render this as "to make a name by great and terrible things." Would this be consistent with the Hebrew? From the heart, Ray |
