1 | Is denominatalism a sin? | NT general Archive 1 | Morant61 | 51981
Greetings Grace and Truth! I was trying to be somewhat funny, but serious at the same time. 1 Cor. 1:10-16 is written to the local church at Cornith, not to different denominations or different city churches. So, the term used is 'division' not 'denomination'. I'm not defending everything about denominations, but there definitely is not a verse which prohibits them. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim be real, You know that all the letters that were written were passed around to all the churches at that time! Here's evidents, Col 4:16 "And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea". You are right about the word (denominations) because they did not exist then! |

Greetings Grace and Truth! I am being real! :-) How could 1 Cor. 1:10-16 be speaking of denominations, when they didn't exist? ;-) Seriously though, I think denominations were inevitable. Take this forum for example! We all see things differently from one another. Some of the differences are minor and inconsequential, but others are serious. How long would you stay in a local church which saw things differently than you? Would you submit to what the pastor said, or would you team up with people who thought like you? This is how denominations basically came into being. There are many important differences, but most of the differences between denominations are examples of majoring in minors! Even in the first century, there were groups within Christianity spreading false doctrine. When Paul, or another Apostle, would confront them, a division would occur based upon doctrine (assuming that they did not submit to his authority). I wish things were different. I wish everyone thought just like me! :-) But, not everyone does. Well, I've got to run my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

What Paul was confounting is divisions, which turned christians away from the Lord. And as you mentioned people do think differently, and that's the problem, we are commanded to speak the same thing, it's not about what we think, it's about what the Lord thinks, that's who we are told to follow. Paul said "be ye followers of me even as I am of Christ" so if a minister stop following Christ, he would have to go or I'll go somewhere else. Denomination were inevitable, but are they right in God's sight, according to His word.

At the risk of sounding like I condone denominationalism, divisions were around even before Paul. They existed even in the days Jesus bodily walked the Earth: Mark 9:38 John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us." Mark 9:39 But Jesus said, "Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. Mark 9:40 "For he who is not against us is for us. Mark 9:41 "For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward..."(NASB) In my humble opinion, the key verse is 9:40--"For he who is not against us is for us." We are human. we will not always agree with each other. Jesus understood this, and (gently)rebuked John from forbidding those who did not follow the Apostles. May the Grace of Our Lord be with you!! 2nd Samuel 22 |

I agree with this point, because they spoke the same thing. The denominations of today do not speak the same things. I'm sure you have some history background, when this country was founded, all of the battles among the Quakers and Protestants and other goups, they all taught something different, no one would come to the knowledge of the truth.
