I am a leader in our church and a co-worker of mine recently came to me asking me some questions that have totally confused me. She is Pentecostal. We like to talk about the bible and stuff at lunch. And she asked me two questions #1. Where in the bible did someone receive the Holy Ghost without speaking in tongues? AND #2. Where does it show them baptizing in the name of the father, son, and Holy Ghost? I want to give her a good studied answer and I have not been able to find it in the word. Can someone help me?

Hello n.sregor, 1. Concerning the Holy Spirit and tongues-- Acts 8:14-17 (ESV) Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, [15] who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, [16] for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [17] Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. 2. Concerning baptism-- There were no occasions specified with the full Trinity mentioned. But there was also a time when no name was mentioned (Acts 8:36-38). Steve |

In regard to baptism in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, try "The Great Commission" in Matthew 28:19-20. As far as question #1 is concerned, there are examples in the book of Acts where people received the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues, Acts 2:4, 10:44-48, 19:6. There are also some examples that don't mention whether they spoke in tongues or not, Acts 8:14-17. Also in Acts 9:17-18, Ananius layed hands on Paul and he received the Holy Spirit without mentioning him speaking in tongues. But in 1 Cor. 14:18, Paul thanks God that he speaks in tongues more than the rest of them. Submitted in Love |

I appreciate your help. But I need examples of baptism in the name of Father Son and Holy Ghost. You guys just don't understand. This girl is a bible scholar. If I go to her with the great comission she will tell me the same thing she told me last time. "Show me where they were baptized in any other name besides Jesus."
