Country Girl; Believe me. I understand. My personal survey is intended only to see whether or not individuals believe we are passive or pro-active in the event called "new birth" In other words did you or did you not do something to bring about your new birth? Blessings New Creature |

Greetings New Creature! I like Mark's response to the question. I don't think a simple 'active' or 'passive' will cut it. Certainly, Christ does everything in salvation. He paid the price. He forgives. He cleanses. He makes us new creatures (to use your screen name)! :-) Yet, the gift of salvation must also be accepted. Note what Rom. 5:17 says, "For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ." We must receive god's provision of grace and the gift of righteousness in order to partake of it's benefits. To use a human analogy, if I buy a gift for my wife, she has 'done' nothing to deserve it. I bought it because I wanted to do so. I paid for it, not her. I picked it out, not her. I wrapped it, not her. I offered it to her. But, if she does not accept the gift, the gift will 'do' nothing for her. It simply sits in the box - unopened and unwanted. This is why I don't think and 'either or' answer is sufficient. We are commanded to 'believe' to 'receive', and to 'accept'. These are all 'active' voice commands. But, are 'action' only extends to accepting or rejecting the gift, not purchasing the gift. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hello Brother Tim; I am in complete agreement with EVERYTHING you said. In this discussion I am trying to focus on one single aspect of the whole salvation picture. A gift is one thing, and certainly salvation is a gift. Likewise, I realize that we cannot have salvation without "regeneration" or the "new birth." Both are one and the same. I am of the mind that those who have believed and received Christ by faith, most certainly and necessarily must be "born anew." But the term salvation, at least in my understanding differs from the term "new birth" Therefore by trying to focus on "regeneration" for this study, to see how different our beliefs are on this topic is what I am attempting to accomplish. It's just a personal study of mine, in which when completed, I hope to be able to share my findings about what participants in this forum believe. I have already seen where some believe, we are passive in regeneration, while others are saying that we are either active, or at least semi-active in bringing about the event called regeneration. That is why I find this topic interesting. God bless you brother Tim New Creature |

Greetings New Creature! I understand what you are trying to do, but I believe it to be an artifical distinction. Scripture only mentions regeneration and being born from above one time. Neither verse tells us much of anything about when this occurs. My position is that someone who is saved is has been regenerated and born from above. In others words, I believe them to be synomous terms. I understand that some theological perspectives believe that regeneration must come before salvation, but Scripture simply doesn't say that anywhere. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
