Jesus certainly had brothers and sisters, the most well known of which was James the Righteous, who became a Christian leader in Jeruselem. As to whether they were also the children of Mary, the bible doesn't specifically say to my knowledge, but they appear to have been younger than Jesus so it would seem likely. Mk 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. Mtt 13:55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? |

Alencon: If Jesus' siblings weren't the children of Mary, how could they possibly be His siblings? At all events Mary's offspring were most assuredly subsequent to Jesus' virgin birth and at that were only half-brothers and half-sisters. Jesus had no human father but His siblings did. --Hank

Hank, I didn't say they weren't the children of Mary simply that the bible didn't specifically state so (which to my knowledge it doesn't). I was just trying to be precise. I have seen some opinions that they may have been Joseph's children by an earlier marriage, thus the point that if they were younger then they had to be the children of Mary. Note that the words in Mark and Matthew are spoken by the townsfolk who would assume that Joseph was the father of Jesus. Anyway I agree that they were certainly the children of Mary but didn't want to answer with an opinion. |

Alencon: Neither did I give a speculative opinion but a conclusion based on known biblical facts. I cannot see any cogent reason whatever to advance the decidedly untenable hypothesis that Joseph sired children before he married Mary. This is speculation in the superlative degree; and even if it were true, the offspring of Joseph's seed by a woman other than Mary could in no sense be considered related to Jesus by genetic lineage. I like your astute observation regarding the assumption by the townsfolk that Joseph was Jesus' biological father, and I've wondered whether there were rumors about the legitimacy of the carpenter's son. Scripture is silent on this point, of course, but it is not silent that Jesus was mocked and scoffed at for virtually everything else He did, said, or claimed to be. The mockers and the scoffers rot in their graves, but praise God, our victorious Redeemer lives! --Hank

True, the speculation about earlier children of Joseph has no basis. We are in agreement that your conclusion is the only biblically sound one. Unfortunately there probably were speculations about the legitimacy of Jesus. It is curious that he is never refered to by anyone as Jesus bar Joseph, which based upon the assumption that Joseph was his father, would have been normal 1st century Palistinian usage. Even Pilate, though he refers to Jesus bar Abbas does not say Jesus bar Joseph. Matthew 27:17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? [Jesus] Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? Of course it may also simply be that the evangelists didn't bother to record the use of the name. |
