Matthew most likely focused on Jesus' Jewish background in order to identify with his (Mathhew's) audience. Many scholars hold that Matthew was written to a Jewish audience while Luke was written to a Gentile audience. As such, each author would emphasize different things that would ring true with his intended audience. For example, Matthew, writing to Jews, really establishes a link between Jesus and Moses. Just as Moses was a target of infanticide, so was Jesus. Just as Moses had an exodus involving Egypt, so did Jesus (Matthew writes that Joseph and family went to Egypt to escape Herod). Matthew's audience, being predominantly Jewish and having incredible respect for Moses, reads the Gospel and says, "Oh, Jesus is one like Moses, but greater than Moses. While Moses was the savior of our people back then, Jesus is the new Savior." |
