There was a question asked in Bible study regarding the "sons of God" in Genesis 6:2 and Job 1:6. Our assignment was to research these passages. The question is who is does the "sons of God" refer to? and is the same reference made in both passages. Please elaborate. | ||||||

n2deep, This is long so hold on. A phrase with 3 meanings. 1)Job1:6 and 2:1 is used for angelic beings or non-human. Satan appears with them but is not one of them. 2) N.T.--Appears as a name for the people who are in a covenant relationship with GOD.This exact phrase never appears in the O.T., although the idea is implied. Isa43:6,45:11,GOD refers to the children of Isreal, whom he promised to gather together as sons and daughters. Rom 8:12-19, Gal 4:5,Heb 2:10,12:7. The process is described as one of adoption by which believers become a child of GOD. Other passages use the phrase children of GOD with the same basic meaning. Jn 1:12, Phil 2:15, 1Jn 3:1-2. 3)- Gen 6:1-4 The context of these verses gives important clues that the " sons of GOD" in this case are not angelic beings. One clue is found in the total biblical text. Nowhere else in the Bible is there even a hint that a non-human and humans can mate. There are many parallels in pagan thought, but not in biblical thought. 2nd clue occurs in the passage its self. The Hebrew verb in verse 2 translated "took them wifes" is the standard verb in the Old Testament for marriage. In the N.T.,Jesus states, that angels do not marry (Matt 22:30 | ||||||
