1 | lenght of age for humans,by the lord? | Bible general Archive 1 | waiting | 11349
In Genesis 6:3, It said That the Lord said (due to his Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time) "In the future, they will live no more than 120 years". Well, the question is then why later after the flood in Genesis 11-12 did they live to ages of Shem 600yrs.,Arphavad 438yrs., Shelah 433yrs., and so on? Thank you and God Bless you

Hi Waiting First rule of Bible understanding, we know God never lies, therefore if you read something that seems to conflict then your making an incorrect assumption somewhere. Here we have a classic example of such a conflict. Genesis says 120 years and yet we know many that lived longer. Therefore Genesis can't be, as we assumed, placing a limit on man's life. Then the question is what is Genesis 6:3 talking about? Most scholars believe that God is saying He is feed up with man and will give him only 120 more years to live until He brings the flood. The 120 is then the numbers of years man has left from this point in time until God destroys all but Noah and his family in the flood. Notice Psalm 90:10 Moses seems to be saying man’s life span will be 70 years or 80 at best yet again we know men and women that live longer. However in seems 70-80 years is a pretty good average. But how could we have some live longer? Look to Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.” This is the commandment with promise. It says if we honor our parents God will add to our days. I submit to you God’s plan for man is to live between 70-80 years, but He (God) will add or subtract from this. I pray this answers your question. Welcome to the forum Ed |

If you notice, after the flood the lifespans dropped considerably. Noah and his sons lived most of their life before the flood. What I've never understood is why Noah's sons had no kids before the flood or are they not mentioned because they went the way of the world and only the kids after the flood were counted.

Good observation Norrie, remember the earth and man went through some very traumatic changes during the flood. Before the flood it didn’t rain but rather a mist or fog would come up from the ground and supply all watering needs. Also many believe the continents shifted apart during the flood or shortly thereafter. Life for man changed very radically, man began to eat meat, etc. This change in environment, food, and nature had major consequences on man and his life span. Ed |
