2 | To rebuke an elder before all, means all | Bible general Archive 1 | raeaason | 89968
Hello Tim, 1 Timothy, Chapter 5: verse 20 I've read various commentaries and not all agree before the congregation, versus before the other elders.
3 | To rebuke an elder before all, means all | Bible general Archive 1 | Morant61 | 89975
Greetings Raeaason! Thanks for the clarification! Unfortunately, I can only add my opinion to what you have heard. I would say before the entire congregation for two reasons. 1) 'All' is not modified in this verse by 'elders'. So, I would take it to mean all the people. Especially since a group of 'elders' is not mentioned as being those before whom a charge should be brought. 2) Further, this would be in accord with Mt. 18:15-17, where the last step is specifically said to be the taking of the problem before the entire congregation. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

4 | Matthew vs. Timothy about sinning. | Bible general Archive 1 | raeaason | 89988
In the NIV translation, it speaks to addressing the rebuke before "the others" so that they make take warning. As the first portion of that particular passage is speaking about the treatment of elders, one could see it as before the "other elders." Your reference to Matthew, I've been told has nothing to do with the elders of the church, that refers to the congregation only. I do not concur since the Scriptures give procedural steps regarding a brother caught in a sin (fault). The bringing before the "entire" congregation should be the last step in discipline and only when the sinner is unrepentive. Do you agree with me on that note?
5 | Matthew vs. Timothy about sinning. | Bible general Archive 1 | Morant61 | 90007
Greetings Raeaason! Again, it is just my opinion since the text doesn't specifically say, but I would say that 1 Tim. 5:20 is already referring to the third step. The 'two or three' have already been mentioned. They are the ones who brought the accusation. Now, it is to be brought before the entire congregation. I would have difficult seeing 'all' here as being limited to 'elders', since no such group has been mentioned in the passage. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
