This passage takes the familiar sight, of a Roman soldier, and makes a comparison to a Christian. Just like a soldier would not go into battle half dressed a Christian must be fully dressed in their spiritual armor. Eph 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Eph 6:14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, Many people in ancient times wore tunics, which looked like long robes, if a person had to run into battle they would trip on this garment. So to keep from tripping they would tie up the garment to make it more like pants. Girding up you loins is another way of illustrating preparedness. Imagine a Christian with out righteousness, they would be a hypocrite! So just as the breastplate protects the heart of a soldier, being a righteous person protects the very heart of a Christian against Satan’s arrows. Eph 6:15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; Shoddings were like cleats, they gave a soldier stability. Eph 6:16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. This is a big one! The Romans had a saying, “Come home with your shield or come home carried on your shield” This meant come home with your shield or come home dead. The shield was heavy and was a main protection for a soldier. To through down your shield was to flea from a fight. Note to all the armor is meant to protect the front, a head on confrontation. If you turn and ran you exposed your back and became totally vulnerable. Eph 6:17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Helmet protected the head of a soldier, with out this a solider would quickly die in the first attack or blow. Last the sword. This is important the armors mentioned before only purpose was to defend and withstand attacks. Now we are armed with a sword, the word of God. A sword is primarily an offensive weapon meant for striking back. Look sometime at when Jesus was tempted (Matthew chapter 4) when tempted he always responded, “It is written.” Therefore a Christians best way to beat Satan is to strike back with God’s word. Eph 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, To me this is the most interesting part once we have on our amour what are we to do? Get down on are knees and pray because this is Christian’s battlefield. 2 Cor 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, |
