My dear retxar, please excuse my tardiness in responding to your note. I've researched the subject of the singular and plural usages of thou/ye, etc., though not to the extent that I'm yet satisfied with my findings. I think that by and large you're right to consider thou (and its other forms) singular pronouns and ye plural. In Exodus 20, 'thou' (singular) is used in the King James Version in, for example, "Thou shalt not kill." God was addressing more than one person obviously; He was addressing the Israelities. But the Hebrew construction of the sentence may well be such that the antecedent of 'thou' may be the noun 'Israel,' a collective noun but considered singular in a grammatical sense, thus calling for the singular 'thou' instead of the plural 'ye' or 'you.' I cannot say what the Hebrew construction is, because my knowledge of Hebrew is not the least bit better than my knowledge of nuclear physics :-) Perhaps a Hebrew scholar can pick up on this and give us some help..... In any event, friend, I shan't entirely discredit your statement that in the KJV and parts of the older NASB the archaic pronouns can be helpful in identifying whether singular or plural is meant. But, on the other hand, context usually is sufficient to give us a good clue. The original manuscripts are better still, of course, for the learned few who can read them with understanding, but alas! I'm not of this distinguished clan! --Hank

Thank’s Hank! It’s good to know that scholars as Tim and yourself have let me know that I’m not totally off track anyway! I only know hillbilly, not real English, and only a little Hebrew and a little Greek. The little Hebrew owns a shoe store and the little Greek owns a restaurant! later bro, retxar |

retxar, 'tis good to wax humorous betimes: it comforteth the soul, yea, even lifteth the spirit. Knowest I also a little Greek who owneth an eatery, but the little Hebrew of mine acquaintance owneth not a shoe store but a shoe repair shoppe. He mendeth men's soles. --Hank
