I just received a Thompson Chain Reference NAS Bible that I ordered. I assumed it was the updated 1995 NASB, but it is the 1977 version. What is the difference between the two? Did I just buy something that is already out of date? | ||||||

Gould55: Book stores, especially Christian bookstores have about 4 percent profit margin. When they order some Bible it may sit for sometime before it is sold. There is a likely posibility that the update came out a good time after yours was printed. I am not sure, but I have not seen a Thompson Chain Reference NASB updated version yet. Perhaps Thompson has not yet printed it. I had a simular thing with the Indepth Study Bible in NASB. I got the old thee and Thou one. I was very unhappy. I buy only genuine leather as they are made to last a lifetime. So my ignorance it cost me about 80 dollars. I did get the NASB Study Bible Updated by Zondervan, and I am very pleased! So it is buyer beware. If you have not marked in it you might take it back to the store, and see what they are willing to do. Perhaps even if you have marked in it, if the Bookstore knows you were not fully informed they might out of good will make some adjustment. For me the difference was so much I gave the older translation away. My are we not blessed that we can buy things that some people will never have a chance to own. God Bless. agape, justme |

Justme I don't know where you got your infomation but I think it is a tad wrong. First off I get a discount at most Christian book stores of 20 percent so at your 4 percent they are losing money each time they sell me something. Secondly CBD sells most books and Bibles at anywhere from 20-50 percent off and sometimes even hits 75 percent off. Third take a series like the "left behind" series WalMart markets these at 11 dollars and Sam's at 7-9 while the Christian Book stores get around 21 for the hardback. We regularily buy greeting cards from our Christian books store on sale for over 50 percent off. Lastly I have a friend that owns a Christian Book Store and the smile on her face is more than 4 percent. No my friend your numbers are a little off. Christian Book Stores operate at or exceed other retail stores which operate at least a gross profit of 100 percent. In other words if they buy it at 30 they sell it at 60. Of course the cost of doing business must then be subtracted but I assure you the profit is much higher that 4 percent. I know stores owners that make a 100 percent net selling items for 2 and 3 times what they paid. EdB |

EdB: I was addressing gould55, but adding your two cents worth is ok with me. The tone of you note is more than a "tad" unfriendly! I would call it almost sarcastic. I don't mind a open challange to my "information" but you come rather close to saying I don't know where I speak from. I am answering you so you can be better informed. I am not refering to Wal Mart or CBD or Sam's Club! To become a Christian Book Store owner it requires about 25 to 50 thousand dollars, to be an independant owner. When Family Book Stores, which was a franchize, the start up cost was much higher! The price a store owner pays depends on VOLUME! On many books there are minimum count amounts to even buy one. Some require 10, or more. Unless it is a special order which there is little if any profit after transportation and calling the person to tell them the order is in. In a very typical Mom and Pop Christian Book Store they put in about 72 hours in six days! When additional help is required that is an added cost. Location and Name recogintion is the first most important thing a store ouner must have. That means usually a higher rent area. Then it's varity of stock of books. In Bibles alone the expence can be staggering, if you want more than the bare miminum. Customer service is absoultly the most single thing that will make or brake you. Then there is advertizement. Christian radio expects your "support", and phone books, there are usually three to be in. Then you want to be competive, with Wal Mart or CBD or Sams. Now remember these BIG outlet stores buy these books by the hundreds of thousands! Mean while the Mom and Pop store orders what the HOPE will sell! Often books set unsold. Would be customers have handeled books, them and bent covers, or the child mother was carring slobbered on a page or two. There are returns. "I did not know the author was a pertrib person", after reading the book. Or the Bible I picked out for aunt Jane she does not like. This is after her name was put on! Remember the small Book Store Owner has to keep their customer happy so they will return! Just because a Book store marks up a book by 40 percent does not mean that's what they made! Indeed they might well have lost money! A Christian Book Store profit or loss is determined by the end of the year talley of the books! Not on a single item! If you were able to get a typical Christian Book Store owner to tell you their actual profit at the end of the year you would see how mistaken you are! THE TYPICAL INDIVDUAL OWNER MAKES ON THE AVRAGE 4 TO 6 PERCENT! I worked for ZONDERVAN and I was in a special sales division and my commision was about 40 percent, but after expences, and everything the first year I was in the negative for more that 15 percent! the next three years improved. My best year was 3 percent profit. My job was working with churches, and many times they were late with payments, or just quit paying! Do not think that Mom and Pop Christian Book stores don't have there fair share of bad accounts as well. Ther is an assumption that every church should be entitled to an account, and if you don't agree to it see how quickly the news spreds. Just try and see if Sam's or Walmart will special order a book for you. I shop a lot at Wal Mart. But,I also know the old local Bakery, Shoe store, and the Toy store are gone. Sure I save a good amount of money. I expect competive prices. By far, most Local Individual owned Christian Book Stores are not any where near 10 percent. Sure CBD sells for big discounts. If you bought a boxcar full of one kind of set of books you could get them at 50 percent off. Volume times actual price plus 40 percent is quite typical for big stores. I would like to know of ANY book store owned by a Mom and Pop that has made 100 percent. I challenge you to prove your words! EdB, you seen like a person who wants to be a good steward of the money God provides. However many Christians are under the same false misunderstanding about how much Christian book sellers make. You can go to the annual Christian Booksellers convention with your Book Store owner friend, and see for yourself. A Christian Book Store is a Ministry, not for much profit. I will add this too, think of all the different denominations there are. The book store tries to keep material that will fit in all these groups. I know I have said that if all these different authors were ever in one place there would an all out battle of words! So EdB, please reconsider you words. agape, justme |

Justme I'm terribly sorry if I came across sarcastic or unfriendly. I think it was frustration, it seems if the item has a "cross" on it the price goes up. I mentioned Sam and Wal Mart but the same holds true for Borders or any major book retailer. I can buy a Christian book in a major book retailer for at times less than half the price of the Christian book store. And they will special order it for me. My friend who owns a Christian Book store sells her books at between 30-50 percent below normal Christian Book store prices and she is making a fine profit. Enough to put her son through college, pay cash for a house, and drive a paid for Lexus. I never had nerve enough to ask what she is making. I get real frustrated when people are forced to pay outlandish prices for things labeled Christian. Look at the book Prayer of Jabez that just came out. 10.95 for 93 tiny pages and the Christian Books stores were selling them by the cases. If I had a nickel for each one sold I would be a rich man. The Book would have sold anywhere else for under 5 dollars. I'm, sorry you worked for Zondervan, to me they are the worst. After what they did by bringing out the TNIV I will not buy anything Zondervan. So if you tell me you lost money working for them I would believe you, I think that is the kind of company they are. My friend my argument is not with you or Mom and Pop Christian Book stores it is with people making excessive profit on anything called Christian. I know people that can't afford to get a decent Bible at a Christian Book store, yet I can buy them for them for a fraction of the their cost because I know where. That my friend is wrong. As to the point that brought this up. Buying a NASB Thompson. First if he bought it in a Christian Book store the employee should have known enough to tell him it was not the updated version. That probably did not happen. I think he also should be allowed to return it if he chooses. I think that could be a mistake because what he has is a fine Bible. However I feel no pity for the Christian Book Store should they have to take it back. They being the “expert” should have advised him of the differences before purchase if not they are just like the “major” retailers that you spoke about. Again I have no argument with you, nor do I think you do not know about which you speak. However I think your coming from a different perspective than I am. I keep seeing people taken advantage of by purveyors of Christian merchandise, and it is often done in the name of God. Forgive me my brother for coming across less than friendly or argumentative I just hate to see people ripped off. EdB |

Whoa...Sorry my orginal question has sparked some debate. I bought the Thompson NASB on-line and I'm sure I could return it without much problem. It was a handmade calfskin model (very beautiful and very expensive). I was a little frustrated that the publisher is continuing to produce the 77 version when it's been seven years since it was updated. Does the older version have that much of a following, or are the changes in the update so insigificant that it doesn't matter that much? I still haven't decided whether to try to send it back or not. I was hoping for some discussion on the merits, or lack thereof, of either version. |

Gould55 Not to worry, it was just a little misunderstanding between me and Justme. As to your problem, the Thompson Chain reference which I think you bought is an excellent Bible. However Thompson has a tendency to run a little slow when it comes to updates. I imagine adding all their references to a text is a major job and I think they are using older technology. I waited for years for the original NASB to come out in Thompson Chain and I waited even longer for it to come out in NKJV. I have now solved the problem, Wordsearch from Iexalt has the Thompson notes so I can now use them with any Bible even the very new ESV. As Justme said the Thompson Bible is an excellent Bible and very nicely made probably one of the best constructed Bibles on the market today. The chain references are fantastic and many preachers use them to construct their sermons. I use to sit and run reference as my minister spoke I would get to the next verse before him :-). Look through the Bible and notice all the features then decide if you want to return it or not. Aside from the translation I think you will be very happy. You might even consider writing or calling Thompson and see when they expect to update their NASB Bible. The company name is Kirkbide Bible and their number is 1-800-428-4385. If they give you a date let us know I would be interested in having a updated NASB Thompson. EdB |
