Edb: For anyone, me included, to blanketly say ALL members of this or that church or group believe totally in a certian way, is pure ignorance. Most likely not one other person believes exactllay as I do. In deed, I change my ideas as I have grown in Christ. So do movements, Churches, and theologins grow and change. Often changes nake no difference in doctrine or theology. I was a Southern Baptist for many years. I have many dear friends that are Southern Baptist. I attended a Souther Baptist University, and seminary for one year. In 1985 I could not cope, and was not willing to stand alone trying to change something that clearly whoud have caused a division. Now, some 17 years later things are much better. I felt alone, and without a church home even as I pastored three churches that we not SBC. When I was retired we spent three years looking for a church. We finally found Calvary Chapel. They are totally run different than any Baptist church. Yet ther beliefs are very simular. Is Calvary Chapel better than SBC or the other way around? I am pleased to say no. I can say I have come to the conclusion if you are unwilling to be responsible for your own personal spiritual growth then Calvary Chaple is not for a Christian to sit like a sponge. Do we have sponges? Yes we do. Do Southern Baptist have a very clear statement of Faith? Yes they do. And I agree with it. The Church Universal encompasses many believers from many churches, movements, and in places we could not imagine. We have some Assembly of God friends. Our daughter attends their youth night in our area as ther is no other Christian activity near us. We don't agree with some Assembly theology. But we talk to our daughter and it helps us explain why we believe and why, and we explain what they believe and why we do not. So narrow nindedness is something we try to avoid unless there is such a basic theology we just can not accept. I honestly have never thought Assembly of God Churches as Pentecostal. Charismatic yes, that's what I have always refered to them as. Thank you for sharing all this with me. agape, justme |

Justme How interesting! You considered the Assemblies Charismatic. The incoming of charismatic type worship has caused division in many AoG churches. The Assemblies of God were one of the first Pentecostal denominations in America. Birthed out of W. J. Seymour’s 1906 revival at Azusa Street. AoG are dye in the wool Pentecostal and some AoG churches have Charismatic worship but no authentic Assembly of God church holds to the Word of Faith teaching. EdB |

EdB: See how important everyones voice is? Every AoG church member, I know, and I have asked considers then selves Charismatic. With 160 some kinds of Baptists is it any wonder there is such confusion as to what Baptist believe? Thanks again. agape, justme |

Justme Your probably right most do consider themselves Charismatic. The term Pentecostal and Charismatic have become almost synonymous. Again let me explain, Pentecostal is basically the belief that the gifts of the Spirit function today as they did in the first church. Charismatic is basically a form of behavior in the a Pentecostal church. In the early days of Pentecostalism, since is was birthed in the Holiness movement, very thing was done quite proper and very orderly. A Pentecostal meeting comprised of some really good “whole” Gospel preaching and often a message or two with interpretation in tongues, and a lot of prayer. Prayer was the most important thing and tarrying at the altar for hours was the norm. Women wore very long dresses and no makeup and never cut their hair. Men dressed for the most part normally but would never wear ties. Neither sex wore any jewelry except wedding rings. If there was any dancing or such it was done only under the direction of the Holy Spirit. Later as people started to seek more of the sensational rather than the supernatural things did happen. People looked for manifestations and they became more frequent. It stated with Jericho marches (walking around the church worshipping God) going out in the Spirit, prayer lines, healing lines In some churches there were those that ran the pews (jump from the back of one pew to next the length of the church.) and Holy rolling (somersaulting up the aisles). People claimed this was done under the influence of the Holy Spirit and many of the more outlandish actions quickly got the Pentecostal movement labeled as Holy Roller. Eventually most of this sort of activity stopped although some churches still have Jericho marches and dancing in the Spirit. Most have prayer lines and going out in the Spirit. In around the 60’s a phenomena started with choreographed dance and flags and ‘spirited’ singing of choruses. This all lead to the what we could call the Charismatic movement. Soon a church was judge on how “alive” it was, how upbeat the music. Organs were replaced with keyboards and Pianos with drum, guitars and such. Soon a service contained 30-60 minutes of chorus singing, followed by 30 minute – 2 hours of preaching. Dancing or physical movement and waving of the arms became accepted and soon a church had to conform to the new or die. Today there are Pentecostal churches that have an order of service very similar to Presbyterian or Methodist churches in that they sing from hymnals, have responsive readings, and almost a liturgy. Then there are others very Charismatic, where the senses and emotions are stimulated into worship. They play the latest music, have upbeat praise and worship singers and usually full praise bands, laser lights, smoke machines. Most people 50 and over in Pentecostal churches call themselves Pentecostal those younger tend to think of themselves as Charismatic Pentecostals. Although the Pentecostal aspect is getting shoved back Unfortunately in many churches prayer, holiness, and much more is getting left behind. I hope this sheds more light EdB |

EdB. Comming from my background where I was taught to sit or sing and be very controled, this is hard to imagine. I am sure by what you say it meets you need for worship. I am glad you are happy. Agape, justme |

Justme I came from a similar background as you. I do see much of what goes on today as nothing more than flesh and emotions. However I wonder what heaven will be like. Does anyone really believe we will sit around very controlled or do you think we will be falling on our face and worshipping? Does anyone think the crowds will be very controled or dancing and shouting as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords passes by? Maybe we had better get use to here on earth so it won't be such a shock in heaven. Just a thought. EdB |

EdB: John 3:16 The far greater event will to see Jesus. Why he loves my rotten soul, I would love to hear Him Say. Why He did and rescue me, for such a speck of dirt. Perhaps the secomd will be tha change in my disposition where my attitude will love rather thanhave pride or hurt some wounded brethern. Thery is so much To say I don't know how or why, but love will abide. agape, justme |

Justme "The far greater event will to see Jesus". ?? Brother that was what I was talking about!!!! Seeing Jesus!! Do you really think anyone will be able to act controlled and ridgid. Or will we be like Isaiah? Falling on our face crying whoa is me for I'm a person of unclean lips that lives among people with unclean lips. At which point Jesus will reach out His hand and say child of Mine not your righteousness but MINE!!! What a glorious day that will be!!!! Jesus come quickly!!!! I do believe there might be some singing and shouting!!!! EdB |
