Dear John: I attended a very interesting Bible Study once where they asked the question: How does God speak to you? The women were separated from the men and were asked the same question. And notes were compared when the two groups came back together. This was not a pentecostal group. It was, believe it or not, a Luthern group. The men were a bit reluctant to share this experience. But little by little as each man opened up they all began to relate a similar account. My answer then, as it is to you now, explained that when God speaks to me I feel a still small voice in my heart. It is not an audible voice. And the experience is hard to explain. How do you feel speech? Yet this is the best way to describe it. And I think it is in keeping with, 1 Kings 19:11-13, which says: 11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? The next question, how do I know it is the Lord speaking to me? John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: Why does the Lord speak to me? 1. To warn me of danger 2. To tell me to give someone a message 3. In answer to prayer 4. To reveal understanding of His Word. When does the Lord speak to me? Usually when I speak to Him. But sometimes when I am not speaking to Him Most of the Lutherns in the study group described experiences that were very similar. I suppose each man hesitated because of the stigma that is associated with hearing voices nowadays. Most of these men were professionals, engineers, doctors, authors, etc. And it was very humbling for them to open up their hearts under the circumstances. I hope you asked for the same reason we all shared with each other. To confirm your own experience with hearing God speak to you. |

Dear Biynah, I'm an old fashioned kind of christian. I require scriptural support for all I believe. Frankly, purely subjective evidence leaves me cold. Anyone can claim anything they want. So what? What is that to me? I demand proof from God's Word alone. That Word, illuminated by the Holy Spirit to the mind of a believer, is all that we need for edification, doctrine and holy living. Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may PROVE what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. James 1:22 But PROVE yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 1Th 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 2Ti 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. You wrote: "I know the Word of God because the Holy Spirit has revealed it to me because of constant seeking and humbleness of spirit. The Holy Spirit also gave unto me a gift of discernment. I know truth from falsehood. And I am bold to proclaim the truth or expose a lie. I have proclaimed to you that I have seen the lie. This I know for certain. I have asked God the same thing. Is speaking in tongues for today? His answer to me is that he will not glorify man. But he will honor the humble in spirit who seek to glorify Him." Fogive me for saying so but, it sounds more like pride than humility to me. No one but God is right all the time, including you and me! John |

John Reformed, shake hands with another old-fashioned Christian -- me! You state that the word of God illumined by the Holy Spirit dwelling in the regenerate Christian believer is all that we need, and that's true. But to go a step beyond, I'd say it's not only all we need but it is indeed all we have! The illustration your correspondent posted from Kings in the Old Covenant is amply explained in Hebrews 1:1,2 of the New Covenant in Christ: "God who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son..." We have the gospel of Jesus Christ -- the 27 books of the New Covenant -- in its purity and fullness. It is through this gospel that God speaks by His Son. Subjective feelings, hunches, private revelation -- the whole litany of experiential feel-good stuff that masquerades as Christianity among a broad spectrum of modern churches is worthless when it is not and cannot be supported soundly by Scripture. God and His word we can trust to the uttermost. Man's subjective feelings, anecdotal accounts of spiritual experiences and private revelations, and opinions based on little if anything else than emotions or wishful thinking we cannot trust. Your quote from 1 Thess. 5:21 is so appropriate here that I'm going to repeat it: "Test all things: hold fast what is good." [NKJV] It is grievous to see professing Christians today who seem inclined to put feeling before fact and personal opinion before divinely revealed truth. There is one source and only one source that is reliable. That lone source is Scripture. Anything beside it, beyond it, or less than it is a false guide. --Hank | ||||||
