Greetings Serenetime! Good question! Unfortunately, most people can't read Greek and/or Hebrew. Therefore, most will have to rely on trusted Biblical scholars and public reviews of the new translations. I think that new translations are important. Language changes over time and a translation which made sense in one generation may not make any sense for another generation. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim, It is always a pleasure to hear from you. I've always appreciated and respected your responses on issues regarding scripture. But like I have always said that we have to work out our own sole salvation. Can we only trust others? Doesn't the buck always stop with us as the saying goes. We are solely responsible that we understand and absorb the scriptures first and formost on our own, and then rely on other scholars whom have studied for many years. Wouldn't you agree? Take Care and God Bless, SERENETIME |

Greetings Serenetime! Thanks for your response my friend! If I recall correctly, the original question concerned how we can know which translation is closest to the original texts. I agree with you that we are ultimately responsible for studying the Scriptures. However, the issue of translation is simply not one that the average Christian will be able to knowledgeably evaluate. Sometimes, we have to rely on 'experts'. It's like when the air conditioning goes out of my house, I have to call in someone who knows how to fix it. I couldn't, nor am I qualified to judge what they are doing. Translation is this way. If one does not know Greek or Hebrew, there is no way to judge whether or not a translation is correct or not. The best that we can do is make sure that the 'experts' we are trusting are reputable, knowledgeable, honest, and committed to God. Or, we can go out and learn Greek and Hebrew - which would take several years of hard study. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
