what is a good way of checking to see if someone is taking scripture out of context. I was taught to read the scripture before and after it but sometimes that is not enough. | ||||||

That is a starting point, but you really have to take the whole counsel of scripture into account. Paul, for instance, doesn't disagree with himself, and if you believe that the Bible as a whole will not contradict itself then you must use as broad a context as is necessary to resolve any issues or questions. Getting familiar with the original languages is the biggest help that I have found! Often times they will clear up an emphasis, or refine a meaning to where we can better understand the context! There are some good user friendly tools out there that will allow you to do some basic exegesis, (always have a good commentary around too!), and though it takes time, you will become much better equipped to handle scripture, especially in a critical way, if you take the time to dig in. |
