What are your favorite Bible study tools? Or do you not use any? I've found these useful:CONCORDANCES: Strong's (or Crudens) for KJV; NASB Exhaustive (NIV Exhaustive if you use NIV for study and reference)STUDY BIBLES: MacArthur (has NKJV text; Ryrie (available with NASB, KJV, or NIV text); NASB Study Bible (has NASB text with NIV Study Bible notes) published by Zondervan. COMMENTARIES: An excellent and inexpensive one-volume commentary of the entire Bible is "Believer's Bible Commentary" by William MacDonald, published by Thomas Nelson.BIBLE DICTIONARIES: These are so abundant they are weighed, not counted! But investigate before you buy. Some are quite liberal. I like Holman's for general use. It's conservative and has a generous splash of beautiful color photographs of Bible lands.HOW TO BOOKS: Kay Arthur's sound, practical, no-nonsense book, "How To Study Your Bible" can be helpful to just about anyone who wishes to "hide the word in his heart." Thompson Chain Ref. Bible is my favorite Bible study tool because it contains no cometary at all and alows me to interpet God's Word with God's Word, as the Holy Spirit leads, as God planed (John 14:26). Don't get me wrong, I own and use comentarys, but be careful, even the best contain a few doctrinal slants some where or another. I don't think I could write a comentary myself without introducing some "opinions" of my own, as I think anyone would have a hard time not doing. I also use e-Sword Bible Software, which is free by the way (e-sword.net) which I prefer over Nelson and Bible Explorer (and is 300 dollars cheaper!). It has a download called Treasury of Scripture Knowledge that is a lot like the Thompson Chain Ref. that I like a lot.

The Thompson Chain Reference Bible has been in print a long time, which is attestation enough to its usefulness. I believe it is available only in the King James Version. Am I right? As a follow up to something you said about using no keys for study but the reference system and the Bible text itself. There is, of course, no substitute for reading the Bible itself in as pure and accurate a translation as one can lay hands on. The NASB, in the view of many, is as good as they come. But if you are troubled by study Bibles and commentaries for reasons you outlined, your stand is not without merit. But there are rich and instructive alternate routes one can pursue. I'm thinking about a good, responsible Bible dictionary or other books that give you enlightening, factual background information about Bible lands, customs, people, government, laws and the like. These resource materials are relatively free of doctrinal or intrepretive bias and can, like cross references and maps, be an invaluable aid to the modern reader who finds himself frequently puzzled by the way things were done centuries ago and miles away from our time and place. The Lord be with you in all things. Hank.

The Thompson Chain Reference Bibles are available in KJV, NKJV, NASB, and NIV. I prefer the NJKV because it is a modern, literal translation, just as the NASB, but is based on the Antioch manuscripts, where the NASB is based on the Alexandia manuscripts. I really don't want to get into a debate over this, but I base my belief on Acts 6:7, 12:24, 13:49, 19:20 which describes the Word of God as growing, spreading, and multipling, which seem to describe the Antioch manuscripts. The Alexandria manuscripts pretty much just stayed on the shelf and did not grow, spread, or multiply. I also know that whatever is not from faith is sin (Romans 14:23) and you have to go with what you have confidence in. Thank you for your comments and guidence. Don't get me wrong, I am not TROUBLED by study Bibles and commentaries, they are great tools, but they can be very opinionated, like me! God Bless, Jesus Lives!! |
