It seems some Christian personalities have been giving attention to the Shroud of Turin again. It seems some teachers support their faith with evidence that could ultimately be proven wrong by non-believers. It reminds me of the authors who lost credibility after the millenium bug scare turned out to be nothing. Any thoughts? | ||||||

Greetings Dalprad! John 20:7 "and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself." I believe that the Shroud of Turin was the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Here are some things to ponder about the Shroud.. Its "known" history can be traced back to the 13th Century. It contains pigments of plant material that would explain an extended journey through Palestine, Rome, Spain, Egypt and Turin, Italy. It contains a "reverse-negative" image of a man who had suffered death by crucifixion. It is the only one artifact of its kind, being the most thoroughly studied ancient artifact in human history. Yes, I believe that no painter could have ever painted the image on the Shroud, and I believe that the image on the Shroud is a direct result of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. But even if the Shroud did turn out to be a fake, should this shake or have any bearing at all upon our faith in Jesus? By no means! It is not the evidence of the Shroud that spurns us on to a faith in Christianity, it is the evidence of the changed heart within us that gives us all the evidence that we need! "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (John 20:29) And once we know, beyond any doubt, that God sent His only Son to save us, then we have no need of an artifact, such as the Shroud, to tell us this. As people of faith, we can rest assured that God is sovereign- in full control of the universe, science, and events. It was God's mighty hand that brought together the elements of his creation, in perfect timing, to cause the miracles and events we read about in the Bible. With that said, I have enjoyed studying the Shroud myself, and I have several pictures of the Shroud of Turin and its "reverse-negative" image, that shows the face of a man who suffered the death of crucifixion. The internet has several good sites on the Shroud of Turin. I have read several books on the Shroud, and "Shroud-lore" is one of my favorite hobbies! The Shroud of Turin and believing in its authenticity is a celebration of God's loving sovereignty over creation, and it helps non-believers to know that our faith in God and His Word is a sensible faith indeed! "Dear Lord, we may never conclusively know if the Shroud is real, but we know that You are real! Help us to have a stronger faith and to follow You all of our lives. Amen." Blessings to you, Nolan |

Hi, I understand the convincing evidence Nolan. But isn't it dangerous to use something questionable to bring people to Christ? When ministers use this tool to evangelize, they are risking their future credibility if it becomes proven that it is not the real shroud. I'm not disputing the current evidence. But when scripture isn't enough what does that say about us? I'm not criticizing you for beliveing it's real, just concerned about those who rest on it like "more proof". We don't need more proof! Thanks for your reply. God be with you Dan |

Greetings Dalprad! I never said that we should use the Shroud to bring people to Christ.. :-) In fact, I most certainly disagree with this! We should bring people to Christ by using the Bible and Scripture, not by using the Shroud of Turin. I agree with you, ministers are risking their credibility by basing their efforts on the authenticity of the Shroud. I believe that the Shroud in no way should influence our current and Bible-based efforts in winning souls for Christ! We will have much more success at evangelizing with the Bible and with prayer than we will by convincing people that the Shroud of Turin is authentic. To do so (witness with the evidence of the Shroud) is dangerous and completely unfounded. This is idolatry! We should have ALL of our efforts focused on the Bible and prayer when we witness to others for Jesus, and nothing else. Blessings to you my friend! Nolan |
