Greetings Joe! You wrote: "The online debate between Tim Moran and myself, for example (even though I think he is as wrong as he thinks I am), has served both to help me clarify my own thinking and understand the perspectives of others." I agree with you on both points! I do think you are as wrong as you think I am! :-) And, I agree that debate sharpens our beliefs. I also agree with a point that you have made quite well in the past, that our theology is important because it determines our conduct. The fact is Christians do look at things differently. Our world views shape our theology. The biggest filter being (in my opinion) the Calvinism and Arminianism debate. You can probably tell someone what I believe about a verse simply based upon your knowledge that I am Arminian in theology, and I could probably do the same for you. Where am I going with this: I am uncomfortable with any limitation of debate other than civility and free will. I say, have at it! As long as we are respectful to each other, as long as we are basing our views on Scripture, debate and discuss as long as someone is willing. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

I haven't been here long, so I'm not sure my vote counts. :) But I agree with Tim on this. I not only think that new people coming in might be intimidated by a summary report (as in this is the absolute correct cumulative answer), and they might feel less free to state their own opinions/understandings in the form of questions. And as one who can only make it here once a week or less, I guess there would be little point in being here at all unless it would be to "read" the summaries, or if I happened to "catch" a question while it was still only answered by 2 people. :):) I'm sorry, but to me that doesn't sound like a "discussion group". Personally, these discussions put my "understandings" to the test because I have to search scripture to prove out my beliefs. And in many ways I think it can do the same for new people. So even if there is a disagreement in understanding, the new person will at worst have a variety of scriptures to study that will allow the Lord to give them an understanding pertinent to their question from His Word. And perhaps in reality that is the "best". |

Greetings There! Sure your vote counts! Especially if you agree with me! Just kidding...! :-) You make a good point though! Most of the discussions on the forum involve some fairly complex issues. It is very difficult to deal with these issues in very short posts. There are a lot of underlying issues, texts, premises, ect..., that must be dealt with in order to create a solid foundation. So, limiting the discussions (in my opinion) would make it harder to do that. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
