1 | Conjecture or opening scripture? | Rev 22:19 | loobylight | 160374
Hi. I am preaching this week on Rev 3 - the letter to the Laodicean church. I have felt compelled to 'rewrite' that letter to my own congregation. Where do you think the line might be between heresy and conjecture and opening up the scripture? I ahve stayed true to the scripture. Yes, i have embellished and opened out the word - eg 'are you stale?' etc. helpful insight welcome! Loobylight PS - have not used this forum before so please go easy on me! |

God's day to you, loobylight, I would be very careful by the 'rewrite' ... If it violates the verse I cited DO NOT you could say what makes one hot, lukewarm or cold ... and continue with the rest of the passage. Are you preaching thru Revelation? Searcher |

We have been preaching through the seven letters - ths is the last one. i want to be direct! But direct to prompt heart responses not direct to attack or condemn. i merely want people to consider - would Jesus write this to me? Would it be relevant to me? What would my response be if it were me he was writing to. etc etc. 'rewrite' is too harsh a word - i am not suggesting for one moment that what i ma preaching is equivalent to scripture - and i am not arrogant enough to suggest that i can write prophetically to my own church. merely using the word and attempting to take it straight to people's hearts for them to do their own weighing up. Thanks. L

Hi Loobylight, I feel just as strongly as CDBJ about re-wording scripture, and I have had occasion as you to want to really "bring it home" to the people I am speaking to. I have sometimes done, for lack of a better term, "amplified reading", where I will read a passage, interspersing thoughts in my own words. I make plain when I am reading from the Scriptures by voice and body language (raising the Bible, to read directly from it, and reading in a formal voice, then lowering it, looking at my audience, becoming less formal to add comments). "If anyone" - you, or me, we are all responsible before God - "If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy" - even one word. God considers His word so important, well, hear His warning: "If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take his part..." Read the passage to them. Teach upon it. Read back through it, adding thoughts for emphasis. Something like this, anyway. Pray about it. The Holy Spirit wants the people whom you will be teaching to know these things, and to act upon them. He will guide you in what to say, how to say it. Your desire to be used by God to touch the hearts of the ones in your care is what God is looking for. He will use you. It is His own work that He will do. Love in Christ, Mark |
