1 | Enoch's prophesy in OT? | Jude 1:14 | bcbloyd | 1235
Can anyone explain where we in the OT learn of Enoch prophesying the things Jude says he did in Jude 1:14? The closest reference I can find is Moses--not Enoch--mentioning ten thousand holy ones in Deut 33:2. I read somewhere about a "Book of Enoch" that is noncanonical, but haven't seen it. Does this prophecy appear in it? If so, why would Jude mention prophecies from a non-canonical source or why would that book not be included in the Bible?
2 | Enoch's prophesy in OT? | Jude 1:14 | MJH | 138387
Jude does quote Enoch (the book of): "See the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone and convict the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done" (Book of Enoch 1:9) "Enoch the Seventh from Adam prophesied ... 'See the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone and convict the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done'." (Jude 14-15) I do not believe this means that Jude held the book up as authoritative, but I understand that most educated Jews, including Jesus, would have been quite familiar with the book. I am unable to comment any more than this as I have just begun to study the subject, thus bringing be to this forum. God Bless. |

3 | Enoch's prophesy in OT? | Jude 1:14 | BradK | 138399
MJH, I don't believe there's any definitive support that Jude is quoting from the "Book of Enoch" in 1:14. He may have been aware of traditions from extrabiblical sources. What we know of Enoch from scripture is found in Gen. 5, Hebrews 11 and Jude. C.H. Spurgeon says of these passages : "THE three passages of Scripture which I have read are all the authentic information we have concerning Enoch, and it would be idle to supplement it with the fictions of ancient commentators." BradK It isn't a question of IF Jude is quoting Enoch, but why. It is a direct quote from Enoch 1:9. Obviously we do not consider the Book of Enoch to be authoritative, nor written by Enoch; but Jude does quote from it none-the-less. See: http://www.heaven.net.nz/writings/thebookofenoch.htm for an on-line translation of the Book of Enoch. Below is a copy of Book of Enoch 1:9 "And behold! He cometh with ten thousands of His holy ones To execute judgement upon all, And to destroy all the ungodly: And to convict all flesh Of all the works of their ungodliness which they have ungodly committed, And of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him." MJH, I'm not trying to engage in debate here, my friend. All I'm saying is that I'm not aware that there is unanimous agreement that Jude is quoting Enoch. I don't think IF is a given! The Commentary Critical offers these comments as an introduction to Jude: "As to the book of Enoch, if quoted by Jude, his quotation of a passage from it gives an inspired sanction only to the truth of that passage, not to the whole book; just as Paul, by inspiration, sanctions particular sentiments from Aratus, Epimenides, and Menander, but not all their writings. I think, rather as there is some slight variation between Jude’s statement and that of the book of Enoch, that Jude, though probably not ignorant of the book of Enoch, stamps with inspired sanction the current tradition of the Jews as to Enoch’s prophecies; just as Paul mentions the names of the Egyptian magicians, “Jannes and Jambres” (2Ti 3:8), not mentioned in the Old Testament. At all events, the prophecy ascribed to Enoch by Jude was really his, being sanctioned as such by this inspired writer." Pertaining to 1:14 it says, "The Holy Spirit, by Jude, has sealed the truth of this much of the matter contained in the book of Enoch, though probably that book, as well as Jude, derived it from tradition (compare Note, see on Jud 1:9). There are reasons given by some for thinking the book of Enoch copied from Jude rather than vice versa. It is striking how, from the first, prophecy hastened towards its consummation. The earliest prophecies of the Redeemer dwell on His second coming in glory, rather than His first coming in lowliness (compare Ge 3:15 with Ro 16:20). Enoch, in his translation without death, illustrated that truth which he all his life preached to the unbelieving world, the certainty of the Lord’s coming, and the resurrection of the dead, as the only effectual antidote to their skepticism and self-wise confidence in nature’s permanence." I will check the source you listed for additional info. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

6 | Enoch's prophesy in OT? | Jude 1:14 | MJH | 138510
Thanks for the commentary notes. It is always interesting to see what others have had to say about a text. Here is another: David Stern's Commentary: "Jude quotes 1 Enoch 1:9 . 1 Enoch, a compilation of writings by several authors who lived in the last two centuries BC, is one of the Pseudepigrapha, Jewish books attributed to famous biblical figures, such as Enoch. Such attributation was not deceptive but either hororific or a means of identifying the message of the actual author with the character and activity of the supposed one; compare the writer of an historical novel or documentary who puts words in the mouth of George Washington. Jude's quoting a non-canonical book does not make 1 Enoch inspired Scripture, nore does it disqualify Jude's letter. Paul quated pagan authors at Ac 17:28-29 and Ti 1:12, and no one supposes that their words should be included in Holy writ or Paul's excluded." An interesting study would be to find out how first century Jews and Jewsih believers felt about the Oral Teachings (Oral Torah), and books like Enoch. It's quite interesting, but beyond the scope of this text discussion. It's been nice discussing with you. MJH |
