1 | A fanatic, a zealot or a prophet? | 1 John 4:1 | ShelDee | 204810
I am an elder in our church and have been a Christan for over 50 years, (thank God) am still in the maturing process! I am struggling with a problem of discernment. We have a woman in our church who believes that she hears 'Truth' directly from God. She also totally believes that she hears in a Special way. She is a good woman, and I believe she is sincere. She is coming before our Bd of Elders this week, because she wishes to address the congregation. Because of past experience, I believe that she borders on being fanatical...but how do I know that she is not a Spirit filled prophet? On a personal level she makes me very, very uncomfortable. I need to get past that personal feeling, and understand that she 'might' indeed be led by Christ. Please help.

God's day to you, ShelDee, and welcome to the SBF, Verse 2 says "every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God" ... so I would say that is the first step. We do not usually give advice or counsel here, because we are not qualified and I know face-to-face is better. Nonetheless, we have seen people who say the right things about our LORD ... but should not be allowed to speak to others, even if they are sincere. My heart says for you and the board to ask her what Hebrews 1:1-2 means. Was Christ the final word from God? I would ask her what He has said to her - giving several examples ... and what she wants to say. Check out is anything she says is against the Bible (Acts 17:11). After she speaks to you, use your gift of discrnment to determine if she should speak ... and get the input fron the rest of the board. If allowed bring another with the gift of discrnment for their input. If it is ageed she should speak, have her document what she will say "word for word" .... if that is approved, let her speak, with the agreement if she says something else, one with a gentle spirit will get off and escort her off. I am also thinking something like this should be in your by-laws/ consitution. Searcher |
