Bible Question (short): How can you tell if a prophet is true?

Question (full): Will a true prophet cause you fear, confusion, hurt when giving a personal prophecy? will he advertise himself on a billboard sign with his cell phone number for you to call, will he tell you that if you dont start living in Gods way that you will cause death around others around you and eventually you will end up taking your own life, he tells you personal private things about others to PROVE to you he is a true prophet. he tells you the girl you are with is not the one for you and that God does not want you together no matter what he do, even living for God, he will let a man deceive her and take her away from you anyways. The man will not even love her. He told him good things too and what God has in store for him and he even said I love God, Jesus is Lord and Savior and all that good stuff. then mailed him a package and inside was an envelope with the address already on it for him to sow a seed of 97 dollars to him. It's like he told him good stuff and then bad stuff to scare him. i know prophecy is to cause comfort, hope,guidance, warning and correction. God does not cause harm, shame or embarrassement to others to prove he is a true prophet. I just dont believe this kind of warning and correction is from God. This has left my boyfriend in confusion, hurt, lost, and all the bad things. i understand that Satan can deceive anyone and say whatever he wants to get you to believe him. I know in my heart he is false and even talked to a preacher and he says he is false. so I was just wondering what others thought. This prophet has told him ALL correct things about him and others and things that are going on his life so it's confusing. This has been a very rough time for me. Prayers and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
