1 | sin is the absence of right behavior? | 1 John 3:4 | Timothy Paul | 60283
Hi inheavenseyes, love your handle (o: It helps me if I put sin into two categories: there are sins of comission, (ones that we commit) and sins of omission, (when we fail to do our duty) Sin is simply disobeying God, as Adam and Eve painfully found out in the 3rd chapter of Genesis. Yet, sin also includes any unintended trespasses. (my definition of trespass is to step over the line) see Lev. 4:1-2,"AND THE Lord said to Moses, Say to the Israelites, If anyone shall sin through error or unwittingly in any of the things which the Lord has commanded not to be done, and shall do any one of them-- (AMP) So, even if it is unintentional, it is still sin. Sometimes we may sin and not even realize it until later. This is why God's laws are such an important gift. They are there to teach and guide us so we don't keep repeating the same sin. We must remember that sin is our nature and it is the universal separation of people from God. Romans 6:23 says For the wages which sin pays is death, but the [bountiful] free gift of God is eternal life through (in union with) Jesus Christ our Lord.(AMP) For God so loved the world , He gave His only Son... and He did this while we were yet sinners. Sorry, but my answer has to be No. There is no effort on our part capable of making us sinless. We must trust the truth that Jesus was sent to break through the barrier that separated us from God. When Jesus hung dying and said "It is finished" the curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place was torn in two, effectively removing the barrier between God and humanity. We still commit sin, but forgiveness is an ongoing process. Peace, Tim |

2 | sin is the absence of right behavior? | 1 John 3:4 | disciplerami | 76279
Sin is disobedience to God (1Jn. 3:4; Jas4:17; Col3:25). God has given, as part of the creation, a nature that can sin. Having a nature that can sin is not the same thing as having a 'sin nature.' 'Sin nature', as described today, is not like an animal instinct. We know from nature, that instincts are for preservation. So the supposed 'sin nature' [as described] is less like an instinct, and more of a harmful mutation. A mutated gene is usually deadly, and the 'sin nature' (see mommapbs comments on genetics, etc) is always deadly, except for the few who receive divine intervention from God. Timothy Paul was doing a good job of supporting his beliefs on sin; that is, until he got to the following: "We must remember that sin is our nature and it is the universal separation of people from God." My point continues to be the same: sin is something you do against the will of God. (see post by Timothy Paul, September 6, 2002) Good day. |

Hi, disciplerami, Thank you for your thoughts, I enjoyed your perspective, and while I do not entirely disagree, I must defend my original position. The reason is, I feel that you may be confusing instinct with desire. While my dog's instinct is to eat without being told, he would much rather eat food that is offered from my hand, and not as healthy as the choice that is next to him in the dish. Although this is the wrong choice. This is our nature as well. We would sooner take the choice to satisfy our immediate desire, (which often involves lying, adultery, stealing, etc.), unless it has been explained to us that this would rob us of our inheritance, and we rethink our course. We must be taught to make the right decisions while we have the chance, or our corrupt nature will undoubtably get the best of us. We must agree that having a nature that can sin is not the same as having a nature that is predisposed to sin. Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, said, "It is necessary to impose upon children the doctrines and discipline of a particular church. Man is naturally an ungovernable animal. …" Proverbs 22:6 helps to guide us towards right behavior; "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Otherwise, the bias of our corrupt hearts would draw them away and it would be all the more difficult to restore us to a righteous lifestyle. Peace and Blessings, Tim |
