1 | Are silent protests scriptural? | 1 John 3:17 | Bows44 | 155862
I know some people who participate in abortion clinic protests by placing tape over their mouths with the word LIFE written on them. Based on I John 3:17, I don't see this as a scriptural response. Offering the young ladies help or another way other than abortion seems to be more scriptural. A silent protest such as just described would seem to fit better at courthouses and legislative offices where one could pray for those making decisions to choose life giving and affirming laws and judgements. I know this is a "hot" topic, but I would appreciate some comments, especially if someone can show a scriptural basis for these types of protests.

Bows44: Placing a tape over the mouth with the word "Life" written on it is little if anything more than a Band-Aid approach. It does nothing to solve the underlying problem, which is sin against God and His commandments. In this case it is specifically the Sixth Commandment, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13). We cannot by protesting evil turn it into holiness any more than our legislature can enact laws that turn sinners into saints or our courts ajudicate righteous living and moral conduct from the bench. Christians must learn that the gospel is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16), and regeneration comes from God and from no other (see John 3:3-8). It is therefore our burden to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe the Lord's commandments (Matthew 28:19,20). This is what Christians are commanded to do, and this gospel is what God uses to change lives. God changes lives from the inside out through regeneration. And we are called to be heralds of God's Good News which has power to regenerate. We cannot proclaim the message of the gospel by sticking a tape over our mouths. --Hank

Hi Hank, This is my belief also. Sharing truth in love not silent protest is more effective. When I tried to state this concept to one brother, I was severely rebuked and told I didn't know what I was saying and that they were saving babies in the spirit. This I thought to be a bunch of religious nonesense. These young ladies need a way to save their babies' lives in the natural. This is especially grieving to my spirit as this brother is one I worship and minister with regularly. So I wanted to be sure that I am correct in this view. I want to make sure I am not missing some scriptural basis for the practice of silent protests, so that when we speak again I can be on solid scriptural ground. It is not what we think we should do. It is what God tells us to do. Do you think God could have told them to do these protests as they say? Thank you for your input. Bows44 |

Dear Bows: I must confess that I simply don't know whether these protestors' claims of being ordained by God to protest abortion in the manner that they are going about it are, as they claim, valid and reliable. It may be so. I can tell you this. God has spoken: You shall not murder. And I can also tell you that I believe there is nothing whatever wrong in using our influence as citizens to elect godly men and women to the elective offices in our land who are committed in turn to appoint godly judges who will interpret the Constitution instead of rewrite it. ..... Abortion is horrid! In the United States alone, abortion has terminated the lives of 46 million pre-born babies since January 22, 1973, the date of the U. S. Supreme Court's infamous Roe v. Wade ruling. One baby has been killed every 24 seconds over the course of these 32 years since the Roe v. Wade ruling. For every two babies born, one is surgically aborted. Butchered. Slaughtered. Murdered in cold blood. ..... And yet, in the face of this, we stand by silently and even have the stupid audacity to print on our coins, "In God We Trust" and to use the phrase "One nation under God" in our pledge of allegiance to the flag. Surely this blatant and superlative example of the magnitude of our national hypocrisy must reach the gates of heaven with an indescribably foul stench that offends the nostrils of the Holy God. --Hank

Dear Hank, I agree. But how would you suggest one goes about stopping this practice scripturally besides preaching the gospel, electing Godly officials and prayer? I put forth that by the time a young lady is walking into an abortion clinic this may not be the best time to try and preach to her. However, if one would offer a helping hand in saving her child...i.e. a place to stay, help with medical bills, adopting her child when it is born, then she would be more open to the gospel. Also, many girls getting abortions are saved and know what they are doing is wrong, but are scared and ashamed of their moral failure and therefore believe (falsely or not) that they can not turn to their families for help. The condemnation heaped upon them by these silent protests, do more harm than good, in my opinion. It certainly doesn't stop a single young lady stop and turn around and decide to keep her baby as these protesters readily admit to being true. The solution, I believe is to be willing to give of one's substance to help her out. This is a solution I see as having a scriptural base in 1 John 3:17. Hoping to save some, Bows44 |

Bows, you mention three things that most Christians have the ability to do: preach/teach the gospel, elect godly leaders, and pray. This is a noble triad than which I can think of nothing more excellent or more likely to produce good fruit. But how many Christians do all three, or even one, diligently? Aren't we somewhat like the old farmer who refused to attend classes on agriculture, saying that he already knew how to farm a heap better than he was doing but was just too lazy to do it? --Hank
