Hi Mike, I believe that the NT "anointing" is best explained by 2 Cor. 1:21.(also 1 Jn.2:20,27) Note that it is God who anointed us in Christ and gave(sealed) us the Holy Spirit (vs. 22). This anointing is one time just as it was for the OT Levitical priest(Lev. 4:5). I can find no scriptural basis for a "second" or further anointing as some may teach. It might be of interest to note the usage of 2 different Greek words with reference to anointing. The usage of chrio (Strongs 5548) is found in Lk.4:18,Acts 4:27,10:38,and Heb 1:9. It is always used in connection with the Holy Spirit in these verses. The word aleipho (Strongs 218b)is used in Luke 7:46 and John 11:2,12:3. Its reference here is in connection with being annointed with oil, etc. Yours In Christ, BradK |
