1 | True fellowship through our walk | 1 John 1:7 | Makarios | 26156 | ||
True fellowship through our walk *********************************************** 1 John 1:7 was written as a response to its preceding verse, which describes walking in darkness. These two verses show the contrast in the two lifestyles that are described. A genuine Christian does not walk in darkness but only in the light (2 Cor. 6:14; Eph. 5:8; Col. 1:12,13), and cleansing from sin continually occurs! (v.9) We live in obedience to God's commands when we walk in the light! And we have fellowship with other believers, with God Himself, and continual cleansing from sin (since walking in the light brings to light other sins that need cleansing). We live in such a way that one is enlightened by the truth of who God is. When our conduct reflects God's character, then real fellowship with other Christians and with God is possible. Our fellowship with God is dependent upon walking in God's light! Only the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse us from all sin, making it possible for imperfect believers to have fellowship with a holy God. Since those walking in the light share in the character of God, they will be habitually characterized by God's holiness (3 John 11), which indicates their true fellowship with Him (James 1:27). This contrast of light and darkness continues through 1 John 1:5-2:17.. - Nolan |
