There is a doctrine that goes pretty far back in church history that states that Christ actually descended into "the outer darkness" or "prison" to declare His victory over sin. This is explicitly stated in the Apostles Creed. (I do not necessarily hold to this view myself, but you asked for the orthodox interpretation.) There is a very scholarly and Biblical discussion of this by John Calvin in his Institutes. He talks there about all the various views on this specific topic. You can read it at: http://www.reformed.org/documents/Christ_in_hell/ Check out his arguments and the scripture he cites and form your own opinion. Its interesting reading! :-) |

Since this verse from Peter seems to be talking about living people who are dead in their sins, do you have any other scriptures to support this other view about "the outer darkness or prison?" Does the website provide any such scriptures in support? Sorry, I didn't take the time to check out the site myself. Might do so later on. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

John Calvin was only 27 when he wrote the Institutes, and I appreciate your faith in my ability to present a Reader's Digest version of his exegesis... :-) Nevertheless, I don't think I'm quite up to the task. I apologize. However, I can give you the scriptures that he cites, even though alone they will not adequately synopsize his reasoning. (There is just no substitute or shortcut for study.) Psalm 107:16, Zechariah 9:11, 1 Peter 3:19, Isaiah 53:5, Acts 2:24, Hebrews 5:7, Psalm 22:1, Matthew 27:46, Matthew 3:17, Hebrews 2:15, 1 Peter 3:22, John 13:21, Matthew 26:37, Hebrews 4:15, Hebrews 2:17, Luke 22:44, Luke 22:43, Matthew 26:39, John 12:27-28, Matthew 15:13 * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now, for an encore, I will summarize William Shakespeare's play of Macbeth: Fate, stab, bleed, boo, sad, coup, dead :-) |
