I believe you are looking for 1 Peter 3:18-20 and 4:6, though these passages are interpreted differently depending on the commentary. Matthew Henry has an interesting commentary on this passage. It is his ascertion that Jesus went in His spirit and preached to those that are "now" in prison, but who weren't in prison when Jesus preached to them (still alive). If you read the passage in the NASB, at the end of v18 it reads, "but made alive in the spirit" and then immediately at the beginning of v19 continues, "in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison" So if you read these together, "but made alive in the 'spirit' in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits 'now' in prison. It doesn't say that He went now, it just says that he preached 'sometime' to those that are now in prison. (emphasis '' and words added) 1 Peter 4:6 seems to be answering the objection of how old testament persons could be saved, indicating that "the gospel has been preached even to those who are dead", but it doesn't say when it was preached to them. Certainly Noah preached to the people before the deluge when they were alive and they had ample chance for salvation, both physical and eternal. | ||||||
