A Study of 1 Peter 1:14…………………………………………………………………. Greetings Forum Friends! It has been a little while since I have posted to my study of 1 Peter, but I’m back! We have seen that there are really only two commands in 1 Peter 1:13-16: "Set your hope" and "Be holy". Both of these commands are expanded upon by the participles surrounding them, but they could be summed up in the following way. How should a Christian respond to suffering brought about by the hostility of the world? 1) By setting our hope of our future blessings, and 2) By being holy. The improper response would be to focus too much upon our current circumstances, or to allow our lifestyles to be changed because of our suffering. This is the focus of verse 14. When one is being persecuted because of one’s faith, it is tempting to change the things that mark one as being different. This is the temptation to which the word translated as ‘conform’ refers. It is only used twice in the New Testament - Rom. 12:2 and 1 Peter 1:14. It is a verb which means to change one’s outward appearance or conduct. It doesn’t refer to a real change of character, but only to the outward pattern. In this verse, it could be either middle or passive in voice. Thus, Peter could be saying either: "Don’t change your conduct to conform", or "Don’t allow your conduct to be changed to conform". Either way, the meaning is clear. Our command is "to be holy". We are called to live a certain way in Christ and we must not change our lifestyles because of suffering or allow our lifestyles to be changed by suffering. Christ never called us to be chameleons or to avoid suffering. He called us to be light in a dark world (Mt. 5:16). He called us to stand out and make a difference. We will suffer the adversity and hostility of the world for doing so, but we cannot conform to the world’s standards simply to avoid suffering. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hello, I like the meaning for "Holy". "Hagios" in it's simplest meaning is "to be pure". It stems from cultic practices where the quality of one's worship of their deity was of supreme importance. The intension was to be so "holy" that you became divinity. I find it ironic that we, as Christians, are called not only to be Holy, but to live as Christ lived and to possess the mind that Christ possessed. Not only are we called just to be holy and pure, but to be as Holy and pure as christ is holy and pure. This even ties into the being made righteous, or sanctified, before God. In fact, "sanctified" and "Sanctuary" both have origins connected with "Hagios". There's a lot of doctrine in that little word, "hagios". Jesus Loves You! Jesusman |
