Is it an accurate interpretation of Deut. 33:2 that God asked other nations to be his "Chosen People" before he asked Israel?

Hello TwoHAWK! The words 'Sinai', 'Seir' and 'Paran' are referring to mountains that were associated with the giving of the law (see Genesis 21:21, Judges 5:4-5, and Habakkuk 3:3). (NIV Study Bible - Zondervan) "... Sinai on the S, Seir on the NE, and Paran on the N. These mountains provide a beautiful metaphor, borrowed from the dawn. God, like the morning sun, is the Light that rises to give His beams to all the Promised Land." (MacArthur NKJV Study Bible) I absolutely see no mention at all of any other nation being asked of God other than Israel to be his "Chosen People". Such verses as Genesis 22:18, Exodus 34:24, Numbers 14:15-16, Deut. 2:25, 4:6-8 completely deflate this theory that God called other nations before 'settling' on Israel. Deuteronomy 26:18-19 states, "The LORD has today declared you to be His people, a treasured possession, as He promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments; and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, for praise, fame, and honor; and that you shall be a consecrated people to the LORD your God, as He has spoken." Good study, and Welcome to the Forum! Blessings, Nolan! |

3 | Other nations asked to be "Chosen" 1st? | Deut 33:2 | TwoHAWK | 9700
Nolan, thank you for your kind expression of welcome to the Forum and your thorough response to my question. The question I asked derives from the Jewish Talmud via the first-century leader of Palestinian Jewry, Rabbi Yochanan. Since reading your response, I have revisited pertinent parts of Gen., Exod., and Deut. From God's initial agreement with Abraham (Gen. 12:1-3) to Moses' last address to the Children of Israel in which the covenant is confirmed (Deut. 29:9ff), I turned up no mention of a people other than Israel being approached by God, and I find myself rather persuaded by your view. While I don't feel drawn to pursue this issue further, perhaps the Kabbalah might shed some light... At any rate, thank you again. Aho, TwoHAWK |

4 | Other nations asked to be "Chosen" 1st? | Deut 33:2 | Makarios | 9732
You are very welcome, TwoHAWK! Yes, the Kabbalah might be worth looking into, but God's Word stands solid here- saying that God chose Israel as His people, and He did not choose or 'start with' any other nation other than Israel. I could find more Scriptures on this if you like! :) Other things to consider- Isaiah 55:11 says that God's word will not return empty; therefore, if He had begun with another nation, then wouldn't He of 'finished what He began' with that nation, like He did with Israel? If God had called another nation to be His very own, then He would not have 'given up' on that nation very easily!! In fact, God still has not 'given up' on the nation of Israel, even though He has extended His salvation to all peoples as His 'chosen people' (the church). There is still time for all Jews to come to know Him as their Lord and Savior! TwoHAWK, are you a Messianic Jew? Again, Welcome to the Forum, my friend! Blessings! Nolan |
