1 | Moabites forbidden and Ruth allowed?? | Deut 23:3 | stjohn | 214560
Hi sis, John Gill may be able to shed some light on that for you. Verse 3. An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord,.... Or marry an Israelitish woman, as Jarchi, and so the Targum of Jonathan, "the male Ammonites and Moabites are not fit to take a wife of the congregation of the Lord;" for the Jews restrain this to men, because it is, as Aben Ezra observes, an Ammonite, not an Ammonitess, a Moabite, not a Moabitess; they allow that females of those nations might be married to Israelites, that is, provided they were proselytesses, as Ruth was." John Gill We too, just as Ruth, her being a believer, and proslatite, fall under the Christian dispensation, from the law of Moses. Psalm 28 speaks of God's jugment, and his geace. In it's sumation, verse 9, we see his blessing on all those who trust in Him. "Save Your people and bless Your inheritance; Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever." John |

Thanks John, That's pretty much what I figured, males only. Like I've told you before, when I begin reading Gill, he's sooo good, I forget why I went there. Thanks for being focused for me.....!!!!! Cheri |

3 | Moabites forbidden and Ruth allowed?? | Deut 23:3 | stjohn | 214562
Hi Cheri, You're welcome! :-) Males only, though perhaps in general, may not have been the dividing rule. Some commentator's/scholars believe (as do I) that "anyone" who converted to the Jewish faith, (as now into the Christian faith) would be exempted from eternal judgment, and welcomed into the family of God. Provided that is, if they, in times before the Christ (again as now) were genuine believers. John |

4 | Moabites forbidden and Ruth allowed?? | Deut 23:3 | skccab | 214563
Hiya, I was thinking in terms of one of the Ammonites/Moabites joining themselves to Israel thru conversion, so I'm not sure of that, cos it would go against the "will not...forever" statement. But I can agree that the women and girls could be exempt from it, maybe even young boys who were still teachable....???? Good discussion, thank you. Cheri |

5 | Moabites forbidden and Ruth allowed?? | Deut 23:3 | stjohn | 214565
Cheri, It does look that way, from an OT only, perspective, but when we take in the whole counsel of Scripture, we can see further into the nature of God, His grace, forgiveness, and all redeeming sacrificial love, for all of mankind, and for all time, past, present, and future. Gal 3:28 You wont find "forever" in all translations. The word, "forever" used in this context is, somewhat subjective. Most render it as: down to the tenth generation. "even down to the tenth generation." NIV The NASB has it as: "none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of the LORD," NRSV has it as: "Even to the tenth generation, none of their descendants shall be admitted to the assembly of the Lord," The ESV really makes it confusing, they have it as: "Even to the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord forever," But the Lord's grace is indeed FOREVER-!! "That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants." Rom 9:8 "Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise." Galatians 3:21-29 Everyone, from all times, past, present, future, are saved by the same faith, that is, in Christ, our saviour. No one is excluded, none, who genuinely believe, will put to shame. Faith, is, the magnet that draws God's people to Himself, and the glue that holds us to Him. John |

Shalom again John, Gotcha!! I think we're on the same page, I was asking only in the context of the "OT bible days". I use the NKJV mostly, and it reads like the ESV you quoted, and I knew I was missing something, just couldn't figure out what :o) Cheri |

7 | Moabites forbidden and Ruth allowed?? | Deut 23:3 | stjohn | 214568
Shalom Cheri, I knew you couldn't be far off! :-) I write mostly for those reading along. Another thing we tend to miss, I know I do, when I'm not seeing the big picture is: when it says, even to the tenth generation, even that doesn't mean "everyone" before that tenth generation will be excluded. It just means that everyone who is in that mindset of unbelief will not be excepted. Remember the Israelites brought proselytes out of Egypt with them too. :-) John |
