Scripture ... Leviticus 20:10 "If there is a man who commits adultery with another man's wife, one who commits adultery with his friend's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death" ... but a virgin is not married ... so he may have to marry her |

3 | What if the man is already married? | Deut 22:29 | gengreen | 169643
But if he is already married how does that work? He cannot be married to 2 women right? I had read that in Leviticus also, and of course as we know with the crucufiction we no longer have to be put to death for our sins, but would he still be responsible for the marriage and well being of the virgin? Or like the woman at that well, "go and sin no more", once he has truly asked for forgivness? I guess the question is, is he obligated to the virgin now and not his wife or both?
4 | What if the man is already married? | Deut 22:29 | Searcher56 | 169644
This girl is engaged ... so if she isn't engaged and he is married ... it may not apply. The choices may be pay the father or die. "But if in the field the man finds the girl who is engaged, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lies with her shall die. 26"But you shall do nothing to the girl; there is no sin in the girl worthy of death, for just as a man rises against his neighbor and murders him, so is this case. "When he found her in the field, the engaged girl cried out, but there was no one to save her" (Deu 22:25-28). |

5 | What if the man is already married? | Deut 22:29 | gengreen | 169645
"If a man finds a girl who is a virgin, who is NOT engaged, and seizes her and lies with her and they are discovered" (Deu. 22:28) So she is not engaged...it just interested me that the Bible did not refer to the result if the man was married to another when he commits this violation on the virgin. I cannot believe that he would not be held accountable for the deed, but the assumption may have been that when your married you do not do this kind of thing??? I beleive we all know better than that, infidelity is rampant in our society. Thanks for all the help-- please chime in if anyone has any further scriptural referrences for this question. |

6 | What if the man is already married? | Deut 22:29 | kalos | 169647
Gengreen: If the man is married to another woman when he commits this violation of the virgin, then he is guilty of breaking a different law: Thou shalt not commit adultery (Ex 20:14). The death penalty applies to the man. The man has committed adultery, regardless of whether the virgin was betrothed or not. As to his obligation to the woman or her father, I'm not aware of a law requiring a man to make restitution before he is executed. If he doesn't make restitution, what are they going to do about it -- kill him twice? So the case of an unmarried man is addressed in Deuteronomy 22:28-29. The case of a married man is addressed in Exodus 20:14. Grace to you, Kalos |
