1 | OT Promises for New Testament believers? | Heb 8:9 | Mommapbs | 60540
Greetings Johnny. Thank you for your reply. I agree we are not under the Law. And I also agree that as Gentiles, we have no "right" to the land that God promised as a possession to Israel. However, I base my reasoning upon Gen 17:19. God specifically DENIES the descendents of Ishmael from His promise of the land. Some may argue that as believers, we are ingrafted branches into Israel and therefore suggest that as "adopted" children we too have a "right" to the promised land. Yet, throughout Scripture we see earthly reminders of a Heavenly reality. OUR inheritance is an eternal one, a promised land that will never fade away . . . However, I am more interested in whether or not we can appropriate the PROMISES of God in the OLD Testament. For example, see the passage in Jer 29:11-14. Can believers draw comfort from these promises to the nation of Israel in exile? Why or why not? Please support your answer. Blessings, Mommapbs |

2 | OT Promises for New Testament believers? | Heb 8:9 | Searcher56 | 60543
Scripture ... Mat 5:17-20; Act 15:1-21; Rom 9:11-24; Gal 4:1-7, 5:16-26 ... Mommapbs, Again I say ... there are promises (warnings) for specific people and sometimes a specific period ... yes, there are promises (warnings) for all. We cannot claim those which do not belong to us, including 1 Chr 7:14. Side note ... I think it is tougher to be led by the Holy Spirit than to be under the (OT) Law. The latter didn't always look at the heart. However, the Law has never be done away ... yet, the early church only put a few restrictions on us Gentiles. I think as adopted ones, we still need to obey the Father, just as the natural sons. Searcher |

Thanks Searcher! I read your references and don't understand how you arrived at the statement,"We cannot claim those which do not belong to us, including 1 Chr 7:14." This is a promise, yes as it was written to Israel, but what about Romans 9:23-26, 30-33? What about this righteousness that comes from faith? Doesn't our training in this righteouness come from ALL Scripture? (2 Tim 3:16) Woe is me if I (as one of His people who are not His people Hosea 2:23) cannot depend upon the promise of God (to Israel)that He will forgive me when I call upon Him in repentance! (2 Chron 7:14) Blessings, Mommapbs |

4 | OT Promises for New Testament believers? | Heb 8:9 | Searcher56 | 60556
Mommapbs, It should be 2 Chr 7:14. 2 Chr 7:13 "If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, 14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. We, as Christians, may be His people and called by His name. However, we do not have land, which describes a nation, in particular Israel. It is important to read the entire context. This verse also is not the USA. We are not His people and nor called by His name. We have not seen locust for awhile. Romans 9:23-26, 30 is about us Gentiles ... Romans 9:27-29, 31-33 is about Israel. Searcher |
