Greetings Glossy44, Abraham, as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings (Genesis 14:18-20 and Hebrews 7:1-2), paid a tenth of all the spoils to Melchizedek, who was a priest of God. Abraham said that God is the POSSESSOR of all things (Gen. 14:22), and he was resolved to give back to God his share in tribute. Later, we see Jacob in Genesis 28:22 pledge a tenth of all that he receives to God, because of the blessing that he received from the Lord (Genesis 28:10-22). Pharoah received a fifth of the harvest (Genesis 47:24-26). Israel, as a nation, gave a tithe (Numbers 18:26). God commanded a tithe (Deuteronomy 14:22-23). Tithes were given to the poor (Deut. 14:28, 26:12). If you pledge to give a tithe, then the Lord requires you to be dependable (Deut. 23:23). Futhermore, we are challenged to tithe (Malachi 3:6-10), and not to deny what should be given back and used for the Lord's purposes. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3 | Tell me about the 10 percent of giving | Heb 7:2 | lionheart | 195216 | ||
Brother, Glad to see you back posting on a regular basis. I've been going back and studying this out as this is a subject that is repeatedly addressed with varying points of view. I believe as one studies out the bible we will see how God has established benchmarks throughout. We see throughout the Old Testament where one tenth is discussed and there are many that stand by and practice that standard today. And I commend them for it it. I would rather have nine tenths with God's blessing than all of it without the blessing of God. Now with that in mind I refer us to 2 Corinthians 9:7- Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Giving is a matter of heart. If we get legalistic then it just isn't going to happen with any regularity if at all. We see throughout the OT where God has instructed folks to give according to their ability. We've all come into our walks with God with varying abilities and resources. When it comes to giving it goes way beyond our finances. The question we all need to ask ourselfs is what do believe where scriptures like John 15:13, Philippians 4:19 and Psalm 37:25 are concerned. I think when we have this in perspective giving is no longer an issue when God is our sufficiency and not our own resources. It's good to not be standing on the the hose. In Him, lionheart |

Hi Lionstrong! Dear Brother, it's great to hear from you. I agree: there is more to tithing than just the textbook definition and how it is traditionally interpreted (which is pretty much what I gave to Glossy44). I liked the verses that you cited especially Philippians 4:19 and Psalm 37:25, which are speaking to my own situation now since I am looking for a job. If only we could be more like the church in Acts 2:44-45; I suppose that it is possible that we would not even need a standard 'rate' of tithing, if we simply gave to everyone who was in need. However, Paul also says in 1 Corinthians 9:4,11,14 that those who preach are entitled to having their needs met as well, such as obtaining food and making a living. It would be sufficient for the church to have a way to pay for those who minister to it. Blessings to you, Makarios |
