1 | Dead works | Heb 6:1 | Robin Hass | 170785
What does the biblical writer mean by repentance from 'dead works'. The NLT paraphases it 'evil deeds' which of course is more obvious as to the meaning but merely an interpretation. What are 'dead works' in this context? Robin |

2 | Dead works | Heb 6:1 | Esh | 170788
Hi Robin The writer was explaining to go past the foundation teaching of repentance from sinful deeds in ones life. The word used for dead is nekros which is greek for dead, dead body or death. And word used for works is ergon which means work, works or deeds. So i would take it to mean to repent from works/deeds that lead to death. i.e. deeds of the flesh which are sinful e.g. lust, fornication etc.. and also of works/deeds that were unfruitful and not based on the spirit but of the flesh/worldly which by there nature would be sinful. Hope that helps |

I'd also suggest that "dead works," based on the context, were any deeds performed with the intent of meriting salvific favor with God.
