Hi Keliy, Thank you for responding to my question. I realize I have a LOT to learn. I joined a bible study website and I've chosen to view the Amplified Version while following along with the NIV that I received overseas. It has special meaning to me and I would like it to "build character" while I do the same :) The first chapter? (not sure if that's the correct term,) that I'm reading is Deuteronomy 14. I was afraid I had some sort of version of the Torah as it spoke with regards to unclean food. I had no idea that this was even addressed in a Christian format. I am considering going to the church I grew up in and inquire about Bible studies. As you can see, I am even less than a novice when it comes to my religion. But I greatly appreciate your insight and opinion. I will follow up those studies by reading the questions I find on this site. Thanks very much. Diane |

Hi Diane, Sorry, I had to split this into two parts. Actually, Deu 14 Is a part of the Torah. In a somewhat limited sense, Torah refers to the 5 books of Moses, that we call the pentateuch, (penta means 5), which of course includes: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. God had chosen the Jewish people to bring His Word into the world, so actually the Old Testament is translated from the Hebrew language, -with a little Aramaic too. The laws concerning food begin in Leviticus: 'Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which divide the hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not divide the hoof, it is unclean to you. (Lev 11:4) But, thankfully, for non-Jews at least, these laws end in the New Testament. -So we are not hindered from enjoying bacon with our eggs. (-: See Acts 10:5 and 11:9. Lord bless, keliy |

Hello again Keliy, Well, that explains a lot. The website I was on started me at Deu. When I was young, I would try to read from Genesis and would lose interest pretty quickly. I couldn't understand why it seemed like I was reading the Torah but had the words I had read as a child at the beginning as well. This is going to be a very interesting journey for me. :) I served in the Middle East as a DoD civilian. I volunteered. My friends thought I was crazy but it has been one of the most satisfying expperiences of my life. It is where I received my copy of the NIV Bible, hence the attachment to it. I will certainly check out that website. There are so many that it becomes slightly overwhelming. I appreciate your guidance and enjoy our conversation. Thank you again and God Bless. |
