1 | Immune to poison if my faith is true? | 2 Tim 2:15 | faithfulwondering | 219784 | ||
Hello! I asked this same question at another site, but nobody answered :( I was hoping somebody here could help me. The bible I read this from is the New International Version. The passage is Mark 16:17-18. The sentence is "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well. I can pick up snakes with my hands, but I was wondering about the deadly poison thing. Am I immune to poisons if I truly believe in Jesus? Or have I misinterpreted the scripture? Thanks! |

Hello faithfulwondering, Great question! The most important thing to consider in interpreting this passage (or any other for that matter) is context! Who is being addressed and what is being spoken about. In this context, the disciples are the ones being addressed (16:14). So, the question to ask is this: Is this prescriptve of something to be applied to all believers for all time or is this descriptive (and specific)? To whom does "them" refer? I would offer it's simply descriptive of the powers given them to authenticate that they truly were disciples of the Messiah. If this truly were to apply to us (for all time), then in context, one would have all the miracles described in vs. 17 and 18, not pick and chose as so many do. Not recommended, but you could certainly "test your faith", take a poison and let us know the result:-) Additionally, some of the earliest manuscripts do not include 16:9-20 and end with 16:8! I'd be careful about developing doctrines from questionable or even isolated passages! Ask yourself, 'does this teaching square with the rest of scripture'? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
