1 | Who guards our faith? | 2 Tim 1:12 | charis | 31275
Friends and saints, Paul, who spoke of the battle between the old nature and his new self, seems to be saying that there is blessed assurance that God would keep, would guard his faith until that day. Is there a disclaimer here about Paul forsaking God? (i.e. as long as he keeps his faith) Is Paul not ashamed because he knew he was so strong in his ministry? Until what day? (Yes, these ARE loaded questions! :-)) In Christ Jesus, charis |

2 | Who guards our faith? | 2 Tim 1:12 | king gonzo | 31285
charis, In reading this, I also look at the book of Ephesians, and looking at Ephesians I take note of the passage Eph 1:13-14. In it he specifically talks about us being sealed in with the Holy Spirit of promise, and I believe that this is the key to your question. It is also said that the Spirit will lead us into all truth. I believe that the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps our faith. In this passage, I don't think he is so much forsaking God, as he is saying that God is the one who is taking care of it all, and he is doing this by his Holy Spirit. I believe that if you dig a little further, you'll find that it is through this, which Paul usually refers to as "Christ in me", that he is able to deal with most/all of his problems. I'm not sure if this is the answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps! In Christ, king gonzo |

3 | Who guards our faith? | 2 Tim 1:12 | Ray | 31301
Hi charis, I'm not sure that 2 Timothy is talking about guarding our faith. I believe that it is talking about the life and immortality that has been brought to light through the gospel of our Savior Christ Jesus; verse 10. Guard the treasure that has been entrusted to you. Keep preaching and teaching, retain the standard of sound words which were preached by Paul about the faith and love in Christ Jesus;verse 13. Teach others also, and entrust these sound words to faithful men; 2 Timothy 2:2. Then he goes on and talks more about the word of truth, and the knowledge of the truth. So I see Paul and Timothy as being "strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus"; 2 Timoth 2:1. The book is more concerned with spreading the faith than with losing it. The warring natures is not of concern in this passage. What is being guarded in 2 Timothy 1:14 is the treasure (the good deposit) which had been entrusted to him. When one compares that with the Ephesians passage that king gonzo introduced we see that this treasure is "a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him"; Ephesians 1:17,18. "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling,..." Ephesians 1:13, "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge [Or, a down payment] of our inheritance,..." Contrast 2 Timothy 1:14, "Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure [Literally, good deposit] which has been entrusted to you." So I see not only a Person of the Holy Spirit, but I see a spirit of wisdom and revelation, a spirit of counsel and strength, and the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. See Isaiah 11:2. The study of the Scriptures and handling accurately the word of truth is what we have to be diligent in, and is what will guard the gospel and our faith through the Holy Spirit. The message of truth, the gospel, (Having also believed in the Him, the Truth) is our down payment and good deposit.. Later, Ray |
