1 | What is it about the Gospel? | 2 Tim 1:12 | Aixen7z4 | 123821 | ||
What is it about the Gospel? In Romans 1:16, Paul says he is not ashamed of the Gospel. In 2 Timothy 1:11,12; here it is again. “I am appointed a preacher … for the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed”. He says to Timothy (2 Tim 1:8) “Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord”. The Lord himself opens the possibility that we could be ashamed of him. He says, “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels (Mar 8:38). And now it seems that it is not the adulterous and sinful generation that should be ashamed, but rather those who shine like lights in it. There is something about the offense of the cross (Galatians 5:11), though Paul says that he would choose instead to glory in the cross (v.14). The cross, of course, is central to the Gospel (1 Cor 1:23). What is it about the Gospel that we could be ashamed of? Is it because one who preaches it is not highly esteemed by the world? Is it because its message is considered foolish? Is it because it brings persecution? This last is a question in itself, why the Gospel brings persecution. For some reason I do not get this, and I am asking this question even of the unbelievers that I encounter these days. The words “Gospel” and “shame” do not seem to belong in the same sentence. I would appreciate seeing one thoughtful response before this question is banished to the bowels of this forum. |

"The words “Gospel” and “shame” do not seem to belong in the same sentence" Hi, Aixen7z4! Paul is making reference to Jesus' own words: For if anyone in this adulterous and sinful generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." (Mark 8:38) As you say the Gospel and "shame" should not go together--at least as far as the Christians are concerned... But they do! Every single time that a person professes to be Christian and he/she circumvents God's Word, accommodates society and any anti-Christian doctrine/behavior, ignores God's command to serve the world's, rejects Jesus' teachings because they are inconvenient or outdated... EVERY SINGLE TIME THAT A "CHRISTIAN" IS SILENT IN THE FACE OF INJUSTICE, HATRED, IMMORALITY, OPPRESSION... EVERY TIME THAT A CHRISTIAN FEARS LOOSING HIS/HER PLACE IN SOCIETY AND BLATANTLY DISHONORS GOD BY SIDING WITH MAN'S VALUES WHILE REJECTING GOD'S... It happens on the way to work or at work; it happens on the way to school or at school; it happens on the way to Church and in the Church; it happens at home, with family, friends, acquaintances; it happens on the road; in the public transit system; it happens at the theatre, in front of the TV, and the computer! Every time we choose ourselves over God we are behaving as though we are Christians but ashamed of the Gospels! The Gospels convicts us of what is right and wrong, and, when we are silent or rebelious, we are being ashame of the Gospels--this is a futile attempt to circumvent God... yet, whether we acknowledge the Gospels or not Jesus' Words Judge us and either set us free or condemn us! Have you noticed what happens when a person lends money to a friend? Even when that person does not demand that he/she repay the debt, the person who borrowed the money, and has not intention of repaying the debt, begins to project his/her guilt on the person that loaned out the money; eventually the relationship could even be severed due to the the guilt and the obstinance to not repay the debt! It is the same with a Christian and the Gospels: when the Christian rejects God he/she becomes ashamed of the Gospels in a desperate attempt to silence the Word! God Bless! Angel |
