First, let me give some back about me I have been raised in the Church of Christ, so with that I come with a heavy heart and seek advice of where to find answers on the "authority of elders" in the church. I have read I Timothy and I Peter and other various versus trying to understand this matter. The church I currently attend has elders that are "lording" over the congregation. They have been caught in lies, and other behavior that is unscpritural. The congregation is facing a split and is being torn apart. We have asked them to step down as elders to save from having a split they openly refuse. They beleive they have not done anything wrong. This so heart breaking. Any help or advice on materials that I could read would be greatly appreicated. lilbits |

Scripture ... Matt 18:15-19, 1 Tim 3:8-10, Tit 1:6 ... lilbits, greetings and welcom to the forum. I think you've already taken the first step - pray. I agree with Joe that a split may happen. There was pseudo one at a church we were attending. Most went to other established church. We went elsewhere. The senior pastor refused to step down. The "good old boys" let him stay for about a year. I am thinking that if they are willing to listen to you, ask them if they see what is happening to the people ... and the reason they want to be in power. I don't know what your church's consitution says, but it may give you the answer. One step would be to ignore them (the bullies) and place new elders in accordance with your church's consitution. If they get paid - do not pay them, if that is allowed. Searcher |
