Thank you for the response, however I do not completely understand... We want decons to be selected by God, but practically how does that work... we have a congregation of about 300 and we want to have biblical leadership. I donot see democracy in the scriptures so I agree that a vote is out, but who judges the test results (undoubtedly God gives the test and he judges pass/fail, but how do we keep human will out of the picture?) |

Greetings, I would recommend that you go to Acts 6:1-7. The apostles were in the same position as you. This passage with give you an example that you can easily follow. prayon
3 | What about the selection? | 1 Tim 3:8 | greatfullydead | 77931
How did they choose the men? Vote? Some people might have thought the Joe Disciple was full of the spirit and capable of meeting the criteria, whose to say that person wasn't right, or say there was 9 men who qualified, what happened to the other two? |

Scripture ... Exo 18:13-26, Act 6:1-7, 1 Tim 3:8-13 ... You have been given ver sound advice ... I'll add a few things. 1. It sounds like you want the have elder (deacon) rule. This is fine. Know few churches have pastor rule, others have congregation rule. 2. I currently attend an elder rule church. They serve for a number of years, then sit out. -We nominate our elders. -Then they meet the board. For you, either the pastor must do it the first time, or delegate a few good men to decide (Exo 18:13-26). While the situation may not be exact, the principle applies. Plus, these men may not be on the deacon list. -They probably go over the list (1 Tim 3:8-13) to see how they meet the criteria. I'm not sure if they have to meet all the criteria. -The board makes their recomendations. -Then the congregation votes. If the nominated doesn't want to serve, he is never forced to. When I was single, I was asked. But, because I wasn't a ome woman man, I said no. I met all the other criteria. The board didn't press me with the church bylaws didn't prohibit me. I would say that singles should serve ... there may be some who object and even cause a split. The same is true for one divorced. While it is not the only criteria, it is used many times. 3. The key is prayer ... by the whole congregation ... even more, by the pastor and the few good men (if applicable), and those nominated. I was praying as I wrote this. I hope it is acceptable.
