1 | God always gets what he desires? T or F | 1 Tim 2:3 | DocTrinsograce | 213131
Hi, Norton... The word "felt" in your question seems inappropriate. I am assuming that you aren't really interested in our emotional response to the NASB translators' use of the word "desire" in 1 Timothy 2:4. As we think about how others choose particular words, let us take care in our own choice of words. Do you have access to a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance? In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc, thank you for your reply. Please don't think I have any devious intensions here. I would rather pick people's brains in this sort of set up then rely on the the bible reference books. I am trying to initiate discussion and to do that I ask how one feels or how one thinks about a certain passage. I try to ask my questions in such a way that I want you to know that it is your answer I want and not a reference book. There are some very knowledgeable people on this means and if I'm not out of line I would like to use them. Once again my questions are a way to promote discussion, for my behalf primarily but I'm sure others would be interested also. Thank you Doc..Jesus be with you
3 | God always gets what he desires? T or F | 1 Tim 2:3 | Searcher56 | 213156
God's day to you, Norton, The word desires is in verse 4 "(God) who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." First, to rely on just English is not wise. One needs to look at the original. There are several Greek words we translate desire. Some are ... aiteo, epizeteo, epipotheo, parakaleo, zeloo. Thelo is the Greek word, which is a stronger form of haireomai (choose in English). Thelo is also translated wish and want, as well as others. 2 Peter 3:9 also shows that God "desires" no one to perish. But it doden't mean He will get His way. His determined will cannot be changed ... including the timing of Christ's birth and the other prophecies about Him ... and all He has says that will happened or has. Searcher |
