1 | "he who now restrains" | 2 Thess 2:7 | kalos | 181012
Who is "he who now restrains" 2 Th 2:6-7? ____________________ "There is every possibility that he (Michael) is the restrainer of 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7." ____________________ 'The importance of Michael to the eschatological end times cannot be over-stated. His voice will be heard at the Rapture (1 Thess 4:16). His actions will initiate the final unparalleled persecution of Israel (Dan 12:1). He initiates the battle that ignites the final conflict prior to the coming of the Son to rule all the nations (Rev 12:7). There is every possibility that he is the restrainer of 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7. The former three passages mentioned all deal with the beginning of the forty-two months; time, times and half a time; and, one thousand two hundred and sixty days, which mark the eschatological period just prior to the Lord’s return at Armageddon.' (www.revelationcommentary.org/ 12_chapter.html) The Restrainer is removed AMPLIFIED 2 Th. 2:6-8 6 And now you know what is restraining him [from being revealed at this time]; it is so that he may be manifested (revealed) in his own [appointed] time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness (that hidden principle of rebellion against constituted authority) is already at work in the world, [but it is] restrained only until he who restrains is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one (the antichrist) will be revealed... AMPLIFIED Daniel 12:1 AND AT that time [of the end] Michael shall arise, the great [angelic] prince who defends and has charge of your [Daniel's] people. And there shall be a time of trouble, straitness, and distress such as never was since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the Book [of God's plan for His own]. (www.solagroup.org/articles/ endtimes/ep_0011.html) 'Daniel wrote of Michael, the restrainer, this way: "And at that time shall Michael stand up [literally, stand still or desist from helping Israel], the great prince which standeth [whose normal and continued ministry had been to help Israel]" (Dan. 12:1); and Paul wrote of the restrainer this way: "He who now letteth [restrains] will let [continue his normal restraining ministry], until he be taken out of the way [ceases his normal ministry of restraining]" (2 Th. 2:7). The parallel between the two is conspicuous. 'The apostle Paul clearly had Daniel 12:1 in mind when he wrote 2 Thessalonians 2:7. The clear and compelling allusion to Daniel 12 would indicate that the restrainer is the archangel Michael.1' (www.zionsfire.org/daniel.html) For a detailed explanation of the archangel Michael as the restrainer, see the article by Marv Rosenthal at: www.zionsfire.org/daniel.html |

Kalos Sir; Question , dose not Dan. 12:1 fit Rev 12:7 better than 2 THES. 2:7? How do you explain Jude 9 in relation to what you posted. In HIS Hand, Brian |

Hello Brian, Just a quick question while your waiting for Kalos. Wouldn't it be "in the name of the Lord" that Michael the archangel would do any and all rebuking? I couldn't imagine the angel using any other name to position his authority. Just curious by your question, Jeff |

4 | Power of Michael the Archangel? | 2 Thess 2:7 | Brian#9 | 181106
Evening Jeff, Yes sir, Michael is weaker than Satan and only with GOD's power is he able. How dose that fit with him being the restrainer of 2 Thes 2:7? Would not GOD be the one? The HOLY SPIRIT here in the Church age would be a better fit , would it not? Dan. 12:1 deals with the Jews as Rev. 12:7 dose also. I just want Kalos to explain useing Scripture so I can understand his post. 1 John 1:9 and 1 John 1:7b, Brian |

5 | Power of Michael the Archangel? | 2 Thess 2:7 | jlhetrick | 181116
Hello again brother Brian, I have always believed that the restrainer is the Holy Spirit. Honestly, because that's what I had always heard taught. I have said before that my walk with the Lord has been one of having to unlearn a lot of doctrine I had grown up with. Today may be an example of that. I do not wish to enter into the debate because I simply don't believe I can support an answer with Scripture at this point. I will refer you to post #181004 by our brother CDBJ. I will follow along with the more knowledgeable in my own search for understanding. Just a note though, my question to you was due to your apprent use of the Jude 9. The way you presented it, it appeared that you were of the opinion that Michael is not of sufficient power to be the restrainer. Thanks for your response, Jeff |

Greetings Jeff! One thing about this debate is that it will never be definitively answered in this life since the verse does not identify the 'restrainer'. :-) Here are some old comments I made on this passage. They list several options concerning the identity of the restrainer. **************** Here is my promised attempt to work through 2 Thess. 2:1-12. Context: The context of the passage is clear. Some had apparently heard from someone that the promised future events (the coming of Christ and our being gathered together with Him) had already occurred (2 Thess. 2:1-2). This church appears to have been undergoing intense persecution and the hope of the coming of the Lord was a precious and important promise to them (see 1 Thess. 4-5). However, Paul did not want them to be mentally or emotionally unstable because of a false prophecy, rumor, or even a false letter (2 Thess. 2:2). The fact was that these two events could not take place until two things had occurred: 1) The rebellion occurs, and 2) The man of lawlessness is revealed (2 Thess. 2:3). Unfortunately for us, Paul only alludes to some things which he had already shared with the Thessalonicans (2 Thess. 2:5). So, there will be questions about this text that we will never be able to answer. The Man of Lawlessness Much of this text describes this man of lawlessness who must be revealed before the coming of the Lord and the gathering of the Saints. It is said of him that: 1) He will be a man, but a man characterized as being lawless - v. 3. 2) He will be destined for destruction (cf. Rev. 17:8,11) - v. 3. 3) He will oppose God - v. 4. 4) He will exalt himself over God - v. 4. 5) He will even declare himself to be god in the temple - v. 4. 6) He will be revealed (passive, so someone else reveals or exposes him for who he is) - v. 8. 7) He will be overthrown and destroyed by Christ at His coming - v. 8. 8) His appearance will be with signs, wonders, and evil - vv. 9-10. 9) His appearance will be Satanic in nature - v. 9. The Restrainer All of this is pretty basic to the text. The real questions come when we turn our attention to the meaning of verses 6 and 7. It is clear that the Thessalonicans knew who or what was restraining the man of lawlessness (2 Thess. 2:6), but unfortunately for us, Paul never identifies the restrainer. What do we know for sure? 1) Paul and his audience both knew who or what the restrainer was - v. 6. 2) The purpose of the restraint was to prevent the man of lawlessness from being revealed at an improper time - v. 6. 3) The restraint is presently active - v. 7. 4) The restraint will be removed at some point in the future - v. 7. 5) At that point, the man of lawlessness will be revealed - v. 8. Conclusions The simple fact is that no one can state with any certainty the identity of the restrainer. Scripture is silent on this issue. Thus, any attempts on our part to name the restrainer can only be considered guesses. Here are several assumptions which I believe can be made about the restrainer. 1) The nature of the restraint must be supernatural. 2) The activity of the restrainer has last almost 2,000 years now. Both of these facts indicate that the restrainer could not be a human being. This leads us to the conclusions which some have advanced concerning the identity. a) The Roman Empire. b) Government in general. c) The Church. d) The Holy Spirit. e) And (new to me), Michael the Archangel. I think a) is an impossible position since the Roman empire no longer exists and therefore could not be currently restraining the man of lawlessness. I think b) is questionable. In what sense could a government restrain supernatural evil? I think c), d), and e) are all possible answers. The only problem I have with e) is that there is nothing else in Scripture that indicates this. Dan. 12:1 does not (in my opinion) support this view. Even if it did, Dan. 12:1 identifies Michael as the protector of Israel, not the world. In my view, either c) or d) would be the most likely answers. The Church could be seen as a restraining force until it’s removal from the scene. The Holy Spirit would definitely be able to restrain the man of lawlessness. Ultimately, the real importance of this passage is not in the identify of the restrainer, but in the fact that even the man of lawlessness is subject to God’s sovereign plan. Hello and thanks brother Tim. I agree that it is impossible to know for sure who the restrainer is, although some "guesses" are better supported from Scripture. Fortunately for me, at this time, the Lord has not put a burden on my heart and mind about it. It doesn't matter much to me who or what the restrainer is, especially knowing that, as you pointed out, the Lord God is in control of it all. Still, I somehow got involved in this thread (by posting of course) and have enjoyed the education on the matter. Personally, I love the fact that God's word has mysteries that can not be truly known completely this side of glory. For me, it is the journey in learning that I can not know all about something that teaches me so much. Again, thanks for your well articulated post. God bless, Jeff |

For me... I just think it is the providence of God. That may be a cop out, but the theological issues arising from the "Left Behind" camp are just a bit to messy for my taste. Just my two widow's mites. |
