1 | Is 1 Thess 4:13-18 a rapture reference? | 1 Thess 4:16 | Chusarcik | 62314
I'm doing a study series by Skip Heitzig of Calvary connection. He refers to First Thessalonians 4:13-18 as an example of the rapture of the Christians, yet when I read these verses regarding the coming of the Lord, in my NIV Bible I see no mention of the event, in fact I only see where it states that there will still be some believers living when Christ returns and that the dead in Christ rise first and the remaining believers will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air. Am I missing something here? thanks, Chusarcik |

Hello Chusarcik The word "rapture" is not used in Scripture but speaks of a "taking" or "capturing away." That is what is described in this passage. This taking away has two parts--first the dead, then the living. We don't know exactly how long between these two events (probably just a moment), but it gives an accurate account. Steve |

3 | Don't get why it refers to rapture | 1 Thess 4:16 | Chusarcik | 62376
Steve, Could the living be just the Christians still living after the tribulation before Jesus' return? I'm not understanding why Bible scholars think this means the living will be taken away before Jesus returns? Thanks so much, Chusarcik
4 | Don't get why it refers to rapture | 1 Thess 4:16 | Morant61 | 62407
Greetings Chusarcik! I know that this question was addressed to Steve, but I hope you don't mind if I respond. :-) The main reason that Bible scholars believe that 1 Thess. 4:16 refers to a different event than the second coming of Christ is because of the differences in details. In 1 Thess. 4: a) The dead in Christ are raised to meet Christ in the air - v. 16. b) The living are then caught up to meet Christ in the air - v. 17. c) Yet, no mention is made of Christ coming to earth in this passage. All of these events take place in the air. Yet, in Rev. 19:11-16, the details of the second coming are different. a) Christ returns on a horse - v. 11. b) The armies of Heaven are following Him on horses as well - v. 14. c) Christ conquors and rules - v. 15. So, based on the details, these two passages appear to describe two different events. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
