1 | Who are: Freeman, God Fearers, Proselyt? | Col 3:11 | MJH | 139104
Who were the "Freeman", the "God Fearers" and the "Proselytites"? It is the “Freeman” that I am most interested in. I remember parts of a talk I heard about who these people were in 1st Century Israel, but have forgotten. I can not seem to find the answer now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

2 | Who are: Freeman, God Fearers, Proselyt? | Col 3:11 | EdB | 139107
Proselytes were men or women at converted from paganism to Judaism at first. Later the term was used to describe people that turned to Christianity. While the word God fearers doesn’t appear in the Bible the name suggests that they were people that feared God. As for the Freemen your most interested in, I’m not sure what you heard but basically in first century Rome there was an exceedingly high number of slaves that were freed. A person that was once a slave was known as a freeman. However the tile was also used by lower class Romans. Lacking a better title they considered themselves “Freemen” thus emphasizing at least their status as free Roman citizens. Perhaps if you give some information of what you heard we could better help you find the answer your seeking. EdB |
