1 | Absent in body, present in spirit? | Col 2:5 | RWC | 243176
It is hard to imagine that, even after all of the years that this forum has operating, no one has asked the following question! What exactly does Paul mean when he says, "though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit"?
2 | Absent in body, present in spirit? | Col 2:5 | EdB | 243178
This is a figure of speech. Paul is saying while he not there physically he is there in spirit. Or that he is for them or agreeing with them, holding them up in prayer. We often say something similar when a love one goes off to a competition where we can't go. We are saying we will root or cheer for them we will listen or watch them on TV or news. While we aren't physically there we are there in our spirit and mind. |

Thank you for your reply, Ed. While I am not opposed to the understanding that this is intended by Paul as a figure of speech, Paul's language here seems to suggest something more. He is using language that is decidedly different (I am with you, and I see your works) than what he used at the beginning of the letter that speaks of him having heard about them (1:4,8,9). Is there something specific, in the context here or elsewhere, that lends credence to the understanding that Paul does not intend this to taken literally? Or is it actually intended to suggest that he had maybe been given some kind of a vision of them or something more supernatural?

Obviously God sees all knows all, that said the Holy Spirit being a part of the God head also knows all sees all. 1 Cor 12:8 says 2 of the gifts of the Spirit is wisdom and knowledge. Scripture says some will dream dreams and have visions. We know Jesus saw and knew things that could only be known/seen supernaturally. That said since this ability isn't specifically seen in man in scripture it would be Presumptuous of us to to assume Paul had the ability. Is it possible? Yes but to what end? I do believe that if we are sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit that He will lead us to pray for others in times of their need. Many tell of prayer partners knowing of their partners needs before it was ever verbally told to them. After all we are part of the body of Christ. When a person stubs their toe the rest of the body is made aware. Is the ability to see distant happenings something we should seek? No absolutely not! But being more sensitive to the Spirit, being more led of the Spirit is! |
