Does anybody know, what is the scripture Paul quotes here? I read an article some time ago, where it was told to be a quotation from "a book now lost" - "Hebrew apocalypse of Elijah". But the author of that article wasn't sure of this. | ||||||

Greetings SD! The Bible Knowledge Commentary says of this verse: "The introductory formula, This is why it is said, seems to indicate a quotation from the Old Testament, but it is difficult to identify unless it is a combination of passages (e.g., Isa. 26:19; 51:17; 52:1; 60:1). Possibly it is a quotation from an early Christian hymn." It was not an uncommon practice in those days to string quotations together in such a way that they were almost impossible to identify. Thus, the allusion could be to the OT or even to any early Christian hymn or teaching. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Greeting Tim - I know that this is an old post, but as I read this I thought about Jesus praying in the garden (Mt 26:45-6) and asking His disciples to "keep watch." Yet what did they do but fall asleep! Notice how Jesus tells them to "get up"! Also when He was transfigured - Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory . . . Luke 9:32. Possibly this is what Paul was referencing. My purpose in coming to this verse is to challenge believers to discern the days in which we live; to recognize the spiritual battle that rages all around us and to remind them that we must engage the enemy - and not slumber on . . . (certainly he has been on the prowl here lately!) Blessings to you and yours, t |
