1 | Who constitutes the church? | Eph 4:3 | Immanuelsown | 206003
Who constitutes the church? Body of Christ? With all of the different churches, religions, denominations. How do we know which one is right? Eph.(4:1-6) Because there is one body, and one Spirit. So I guess my question is, with all the divisions what religion, denomination is the body. |

God's day to you, Immanuelsown, and welsome to the SBF, The church that is right for you is one where you both agree with all the major doctrines. Second you don't have difficulties with the minor issues and the consitution and by laws. Third, a place where you can serve and use your spiritual gifts. Searcher |

Hi, Val... People without published creeds and confessions have to reinvent the wheel. That's why the old divines worked so hard to be able to articulate the doctrines, so that outsiders would know precisely what we believed. I tried to summarize the essential doctrines in my user profile. Nevertheless, I'll give it a shot here: Major doctrines would be about the Word (its source, its contents, its authority, its interpretation); about God (His nature, His decrees, His creation, His sovereignty); about man (his nature, the fall, sin); about God's covenant and Christ, the only Mediator); about salvation (including the proper order of its blessings: effectual calling, justification, adoption, sanctification, saving faith, repentance, perseverance, interim state, resurrection, glory); about good works and Christian liberty; about the church (its worship, ordinances, authority, officers); and about civil government. Of course, each of these topics can be decomposed into doctrinal studies themselves. By the way, I'd have not used the phrase "major doctrines." I think that Searcher probably meant "essential doctrines" or we might call them "fundamental doctrines." To the question of what are the essential doctrines, John Piper said, "My principal answer is that the fundamental doctrines are those that grow out from the center of the gospel: Christ died for our sins and rose again the third day. Who is Christ? What happened at the cross? What is the nature of faith? etc. The closer it is towards the center, the more necessary it is for being a Christian, the more fundamental it is." The Augsburg Confession, the Canons of Dort, the Helvitic Confessions, the Belgian Confession, the Westminster Confession, and the Historic Baptist Confessions all make attempts at answering the question of essential doctrine. On the whole, they are incredibly consistent. Of course, unlike today, where we create our essential doctrines out of thin air (i.e., they aren't written down) those fellows all carefully studied and listened to the other scholars while applying the Acts 17:11 principle. 5 | Who constitutes the church? | Eph 4:3 | Val | 206018
Thank you Mr. Doc. The reason I asked is because I am visiting a different denomination - The Church of the Nazarene and I have been critized by someone because they said its wrong to say the Lord's Prayer on a regular basis, that its not from the heart and secondly that I know or I interpret them as saying that you can lose your salvation. I don't believe a true christian can and was just wondering if I could still go there. Does that fall in essential doctrine? |

Hi Val-.. Can you please clear something up for me? You Wrote: "I have been criticized by someone because they said its wrong to say the Lord's Prayer on a regular basis, that its not from the heart" My Question is: Who is it that says that about the Lord's prayer? Was it that someone? or, The folks at the Church you mentioned? That said it was wrong to say the Lords prayer..... Thanks Val, John |

7 | Who constitutes the church? | Eph 4:3 | Val | 206024
I had a ladies group in my home. We said in a group before the meeting "the Lord's Prayer". We went for about 6 weeks. After the group ended, a lady in the group critized me for using that format. She said that it was ritualist and that the Lord's prayer was not to be used that way, that it was only a model, that it was not from the heart, that it was not spirit-led and that she would not use it that way and she would not go to a church that used it in their service. She was knocking me because I have recently been visiting the church of the Nazarene and this individual church uses it in the worship service. We all stand and say it. That is where I got the idea. I am not ashamed to pray my own prayer. I just thought it would be nice to include everyone this way. I really didn't think it would be offensive. Blessings, Val |

Hi Sister, How typical for someone being so legalistic to accuse you of being ritualistic! How indicative of the heart of man! 1 Corinthians 2:11 (NASB) 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Steve |

Thank you for the encouragement. Your comments made me smile. I had not thought of it that way but it does shine a light. Thank you for the verse too, my thoughts exactly. Blessings, Val |
